Nine cops killed in suicide in 18 months

By The Nation

During the past 18 months, nine policemen shot themselves to death over personal problems including those related to family and illnesses.

The latest suicide took place last Thursday when Pol Capt Phumisak Racho, Metropolitan Police Bureau's Children, Juveniles and Women Division, killed himself inside his Benz sedan. This commissioned policeman was just 35 years old. His suicide note said, "I am suffering from stress".

In Nakhon Si Thammarat, 42-year-old Pol Sen Sgt Maj Prasarn Jaengwan shot himself in his temple inside his home on February 24. He had family and financial problems.

On December 31 last year, Pol Sgt Suparat Kaewyai shot himself in the same manner at his home in Nakhon Nayok. This 29-year-old policeman suffered from stress despite having outstanding performance and being well-loved among colleagues.

On December 16 last year, Pol Lt Sommai Kengkhetjit shot himself inside a police flat in Rayong. He suffered from stress too.

Another police suicide took place on September 22 last year. Pol Corporal Prasert Rerkyam, 42, shot himself to death out of stress that despite exam cheating was ruining his hard work for the exam that would promote excellent test-takers into a commissioned rank.

Another victim was Pol Sen Sgt Maj Chainarong Boonsirima, who shot himself in the chest on July 14 last year after his wife refused to get back with him. He succumbed to injuries on his way to a hospital in Bangkok.

Pol Sen Sgt Major Kaneung Teekoh, 42, shot himself to death on May 3 in front of his wife in Nakhon Ratchasima. He was upset about his own serious diabetic conditions and her complaints about his drinking habit.

Last May, Pol Sgt Major Suporn Ouncharoen shot himself to death inside a police flat in Chon Buri. In his suicide note, he apologised to his wife, his children and his friends. He said he just could not cope with the heart disease anymore.

In December 2009, Pol Second Lt Kajornwut Boonnuam, 25, shot himself to death inside a police flat. He was upset that his brain was working so slowly after he recovered not fully from Japanese encephalitis.

Pol Major Pattarawut Yangklang, 32, shot himself to death inside his government-provided accommodation unit in Narathiwat. He suffered from stress mainly because his mother was diagnosed with the terminal stage of cancer.

Alcohol abuse is rife and institutionalised within the ranks of the Thai cops. It is also a significant contributory factor in depression and suicide. Couple this with the fact that they all have access to guns 24 hours a day even carrying them when on a bender, it is surprising the numbers are not much higher. But when you can just demand "free" money from pretty much everyone who crosses your path, there is little incentive to kill yourself.

Case of Mr. Racha.

Of course loss of any life is regrettable .

But, something else attracted me in OP.

I wonder how many of you, retired after 60-65 years of work was or is able to afford Benz Sedan?

Tress? Of course. Financial problems that caused the stress are likely because of bill for to maintain such an expensive car?

RIP all of them.

All seems rather odd to me. Stress, or fear of being caught dipping their hands in the tea money tin. Or is it that guilt finally caught up with them, through scamming and extortion. There is an old saying, that goes, what goes around comes around. Must say one or two did seem genuine though.

Racked with guilt from corruption and hatred by the Thai people ??? :whistling:

Agree with the second part, but, the first part...Mmmm......dont know many thai people that would even consider feeling guilty..old and young...and not the police at least....maybe sad they cant sit full time with their mia noi`s....

The word 'stress' here can mean a plethora of things. I'm stressed too but I would not consider killing myself! More to this than meets the eye. Unfortunate any death by violence but this is not all crystal clear, far from it. unsure.gif

No we don't. Suicide is higher for police than most. They have to deal with death on a regular basis and have a high rate of depression as well as alchoholisim. RIP

Yes, but the point is in style he lived.

Because, each Mercedes is matter of prestige. Tells to people something about your"importance" or skills to afford it.

Anywhere in the world and especially in Thailand. With his salary, even a used Benz Sedan is the financial pressure on him but it says a lot about his lifestyle, which he probably could not follow and that is why he ended this way.

If thats the case, surgeons and ER staff should be killing themselves on daily basis. They are the ones who really deal with death on their hands and see the worst human suffering an injury's possible

It may be that some of them had try to be good cops but the bad ones made there lives hell and they couldn't go on anymore!

But I believe it could be what another poster said and they were racked with guilt and fed up that the Thais hated them.

You make a good point. I have the greatest respect for those who have too deal with the public in critica or worse. Here are some statistics on suicide by profession.. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_professions_have_the_highest_suicide_rate

Newbie here. I just can't understand what type of journalism is this?

Journalism 101 would be the who, what , when and why.

The article just list 9 dead cops and how they died. In the States, its called an obituary.

Anyway, 7 more hours and I am boarding a flight to Thailand
