toptuan
Raw chicken Surely not? What about the risk of food poisoning? Surely yes. Nevertheless, my thoughts exactly. This was the featured dish of the mountain restaurant in Kyushu where I attended a business lunch. All the chickens were considered "wild" (caught on the surrounding mountain area) and the preparation/serving was purported to be under the strictest sanitary supervision. They claimed the "wild" chickens were free of the common diseases (particularly salmonella) plagued by their domesticated relatives. The business deal at stake required my wholehearted participation in the meal. Either way, I lived (and clinched the deal). ashacat
The worst thing I have eaten was in Cambo a few years ago. Fertilised duck egg. Just crack the top open as with a normal hard boiled egg but inside is a soft little duckling with feathers, beak etc. Had a taste and couldn't eat any more... Just crack the top open as with a normal hard boiled egg but inside is a soft little duckling with feathers, beak etc. Had a taste and couldn't eat any more... My gf comes back from the Philippines Saturday and has promised to bring me the same thing but I think she said they were chickens eggs. I kinda hope she forgets. Anyway in an Indonesian restaurant I had cow brains curry. I thought it would come all chopped up with bits of veggies etc. Wrong! Half a cow brain in a bowl with curry sauce, yum yum. Can't remember if it was right or left hemisphere so I don't know if I'll go mad logically or artistically. I've had the maeng da, locusts, ant pupae etc etc mostly when p1ssed all of which I've tried again when sober but it takes maeng da to really get the retch muscles in tone. The locusts are quite good, a bit like light grade pork scratchings but you need to wash them down with a beer to clear all the casings, legs and feet out from between your teeth. Cobra curry, illegal I know but I didn't know what it was 'till after, was OK but could have been anything with the sauce. Main trouble was the myriad of little bones. Sea cucumber, or sea slug if you are in mixed company , was another thing like jellyfish that tasted of nothing but the chilly dip.

I was offered one of those jokingly by women coming from the market on a songtao in S Laos and they had a good laugh at the look on my face. I have been told by several South Isaan ladies that back home they eat fertilised chicken eggs - boiled for about 10 minutes. Anyone know the name - kai something, naturally, but I can't remember what?

toptuan
I ask my Thai students the same question. ("What's the strangest or worst thing you've ever eaten?") They come up with gawd-awful things like... "pizza with lots of cheese" "hamburger with cheese" "lasagne" The most infamous dishes usually include some kind of cheese. Sigh. P.S. I took an Isaan friend to a McDonald's for his first ever "all-American meal" (I know, that moniker could be disputed). He politely ate about 1/4 of his BigMac, Strawberry Shake, and fries, when I then asked him: "OK, on a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being "arroy mak"), how would you rate it?" His answer: "Off the scale!" I beamed. He continued, "...on the negative end." His first and last McDonald's meal. Edited December 6, 2006 by toptuan

I think asians got sum sorta lactose intolerance...when in Vietnam I went and got a pizza across the road from the apartment (they advertised spaghetti and fried chicken as well) and it had tomato sauce but no cheese (???) That being said the local fast food chain Lotteria appeared to do a brisk business in cheeseburgers, they were always sold out (or maybe they had to make a couple special for the clazy roundeye)...cheeseburgers were on the menu, but there did not appear to be a lot of foreigners around to eat them... Why people in Thailand, the country with probably the best range of tastfull food, have to resort to eating McDonalds is totally beyond my comprehension. I am told, so don't quote me on this (can't be ar5ed Googling it just to satisfy the TV nitpickers), that France has the world's largest number of McDonalds per head of population. So much for French cuisine.

OneeyedJohn
has it been mentioned already .. Afterbirth from a pig or cow. Tolley
I was in Japan riding on the train when the girl opposite started combing her hair. As she continued to comb dandruff started to fall out of her hair onto a piece of paper she has strategically placed on her lap. She then pushed all the dandruff together in a lump and proceeded to eat it.
