JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) -- A tsunami generated as a result of an enormous earthquake that struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Friday left one person dead in Indonesia, local media reported on Sunday.

The Jakarta Post reported that 35-year-old businessman Darwanto Oddang was killed on late Friday evening when a tsunami wave struck the village of Halltekamp in Papua province. His body was recovered on Saturday afternoon.

The newspaper reported that Darwanto had initially fled the village to an evacuation shelter after the country's seismological agency had issued a tsunami warning as a result of an enormous 9.0-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan.

However, when the agency lifted its tsunami warning on late Friday evening, Darwanto returned to the village on his motorcycle where he was surprised by a tsunami that destroyed six houses and fish ponds. "The residents found him at 2:30 p.m. around 100 meters (328 feet) from the beach. His motorcycle was found 50 meters (164 feet) from where we found his remains," a local official told the newspaper.

In Japan, the earthquake and tsunami have killed more than 900 people and left thousands more missing. Fears are that the death toll could exceed 10,000.
