hello all

<br style="line-height: 17px; ">On my last visit to Bangkok a misunderstanding about the location of my debit cards ended up (not by my request) involving the tourist police and I was invited to spend a night in the cells on the rather spurious charge of wasting police time. The following morning I was not surprised to find a demand for 20,000 bht being made so I could avoid court and another day in the cells (or something). I was able to pay 13000 but couldn't get anymore for a week and promised to pay the difference then. The whole thing was very good humoured and I even went drinking with them while waiting for the 13,000 to arrive in my account. Unfortunately I was forced to return home before the week was up and left owing the 7000. I would like to return to Bangkok but am worried that I will be carted away to the police station on arrival and required to pay 10 times as much or thrown in jail because I am on some sort of black list. Is this possible or am I being paranoid?

cheers

There is probably a lot more to this story than is being told but it sounds like they simply shook you down for " jumping to the wrong conclusion " They got 13000 baht out of you. I don't think you need to worry about them coming for the rest as you will be long since forgotten by the BKK BIB ;)

Just be careful the next time you " mislay " your cards or other belongings etc :D

thanks

I hope you're both right. it would be a shame otherwise. As for there being more to there story there really isn't honestly. I didn't even want the police involved. They were brought in to it because one bar girl wanted to get another bar girl blamed for this. When it turned out no one was guilty I was slung me in the nick for wasting police time! Anyway thanks for the responses it makes me feel a lot better.

They can't officially blacklist you because you have part of their bribe outstanding, so I wouldn't worry about it.

In the unlikely event that you get locked up again at the same station and they remember you, then you may have an issue.

The other possibility is that the original 'wasting police time' was made official and that you absconded. Then you could be marked as wanted. I would guess this would be unlikely though.

Stay away from the area where it happened,

just in case you are recognised..............

You should be ashamed of yourself, running away from a payment like that.

These good, honest, hard-working men of the law would have been busy protecting the good citizens of Bangkok if it was not for the likes of you. Next time you should really be more considerate before having a problem with your cards, the next thing we know you'll be getting them stolen, pffft.

You should return to the station and pay the outstanding amount, with interest. Just think of all the hardship you must have caused on those upstanding, wholesome policemen.

Don't do as above be warned , if you go again you may end up spending the night incarcerated again , but this time you may come out the next day being made a mans man and walking funny with a lithp.

When I woke up in the cell the next morning with a stinkin hangover they asked me if I could remember what happened the night before. When I said yes I could they looked pretty disappointed. God knows what they were hoping to convince me I'd done.

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if some low level officer ended up having to pay the difference for letting him go without confiscating his passport to ensure he'd return.
