A while back I read somewhere about two new places for border crossings, between Korat and Sisaket. Has anybody used these places? Are they safe?

I will be staying in Buriram, and if I could do visa runs from there straight into Cambodia I would save some time and money.

The nearest crossing to Buriram is at Chong Chom, 70 km virtually directly south of Surin. Take the A 24 to Prassat, turn right and it's 40 km straight road. The crossing is hassle free at the moment (I was there last week).
