Bangkok Saves 2,346 Megawatts During Earth Hour

Bangkok saved about 2,300 megawatts of electricity and reduced 1,200 tons of carbon emissions, worth about 6.6 million baht, during Earth Hour on Saturday night.

Bangkok was able to save as much as 2,346 megawatts of electricity and cut carbon emissions by 1,255 tons, as businesses and households switched off non-essential lights for one hour on Saturday night as part of the worldwide Earth Hour campaign.

Earth Hour, which aims to increase awareness about climate change, was joined by 4,616 cities in 128 countries this year, and took place from 8.30 PM to 9.30 PM of participants' time.

Thawat Vadjanapornsit, the deputy governor for corporate social responsibility at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, said that apart from the international effort to fight global warming, his organization will promote the manufacture, import, and distribution of high-quality electric appliances, and will further educate the public about energy conservation.

He said the five-star energy efficiency standard will be imposed on water heaters and televisions this year, in addition to 14 products.

Last year, Bangkok saved 1,620 megawatts and reduced about 1,000 tons of carbon emissions, worth 4.8 million baht, during the one-hour campaign.

The Canadian economist Ross McKitrick puts it into perspective:

I abhor Earth Hour. Abundant, cheap electricity has been the greatest source of human liberation in the 20th century. Every material social advance in the 20th century depended on the proliferation of inexpensive and reliable electricity. Giving women the freedom to work outside the home depended on the availability of electrical appliances that free up time from domestic chores. Getting children out of menial labour and into schools depended on the same thing, as well as the ability to provide safe indoor lighting for reading.

Development and provision of modern health care without electricity is absolutely impossible. The expansion of our food supply, and the promotion of hygiene and nutrition, depended on being able to irrigate fields, cook and refrigerate foods, and have a steady indoor supply of hot water. Many of the world's poor suffer brutal environmental conditions in their own homes because of the necessity of cooking over indoor fires that burn twigs and dung.

This causes local deforestation and the proliferation of smoke- and parasite-related

lung diseases. Anyone who wants to see local conditions improve in the third world should realize the importance of access to cheap electricity from fossil-fuel based power generating stations. After all, that's how the west developed.

The whole mentality around Earth Hour demonizes electricity. I cannot do that, instead I celebrate it and all that it has provided for humanity. Earth Hour celebrates ignorance, poverty and backwardness. By repudiating the greatest engine of liberation it becomes an hour devoted to anti-humanism. It encourages the sanctimonious gesture of turning off trivial appliances for a trivial amount of time, in deference to some ill-defined abstraction called "the Earth," all the while hypocritically retaining the real benefits of continuous, reliable electricity.

People who see virtue in doing without electricity should shut off their fridge, stove, microwave, computer, water heater, lights, TV and all other appliances for a month, not an hour. And pop down to the cardiac unit at the hospital and shut the power off there too.

I don't want to go back to nature. For humans, living in "nature" meant a short life span marked by violence, disease and ignorance.

The Canadian economist Ross McKitrick puts it into perspective:

Rick,

what do you expect from an so called "economist" ? He's taking things out of context.

There's electricity from very cheap sources, clean, economical cheaper than the majority is using now. Why not tap into it in masses that would make that source very very cheap(just one example).

Oh I see, it's blocked by greedy economist that want to sell us dirt for big bugs.

Our sun was designed for 100 billion years, just as an example.

Germany is going to import energy from the deserts soon. Only 3% of the enrgy gets lost during transport for 1000 km.

One big plant there produces the equivalent of 100 nuclear power plants.

Another example that is live for years already.

There's a small city in Germany, 6000 people, that operates and runs with alternative energy and utmost energy saving measures(like isolating the houses properly etc. etc.).

A house with 90 square meter living space had a 89 Euro bill for heating - for the last winter season (not per week - the whole season and it was a very strong and cold winter).

Many say this is outdated and it can be much better than that.

Scrapping all the wire wound ballasts for all the 2 foot and 4 foot strip lights and replace them with corrected or electronic ballasts will save over 50% of electricity per lamp.

A lot more effective than switching them off for an hour.

Earth Hour celebrates ignorance, poverty and backwardness.

This "Carbon" Bullsh*t is the biggest scam in the history of modern mankind. CO2 is an essential gas for life on Earth.

http://www.iceagenow...ackwardness.htm

It's out of balance. Climate-change due to men.

Some say there's no climate change

I say "Ther's no climate change when there's no climate" ;)

Since industrialization has started we have trashed our planet with consequences like increasing natural catastrophies.

Natural climate change wouldn't have gone so far so fast.

1000 years is but 1 day.

Just so...

It should be Megawatthours, not Megawatts (at least when published by a magazine)

The Sun is NOT designed for 100 billion years (not that it will matter much for us)

Yes we need CO2, we also need water (H20), yet still people drown (meaning: context is important, as well as quantity and effect)

Wasting energy (or anything else) is anti-social regardless of whether one subscribes to the climate change theory or not, and not an intelligent form of protest

And finally, most people would have been at the bar during earth hour and not at home ;)

this guy should look for other things to do. He's completely misleading.

I think you need to do a little more homework on your own, and stop listening to Fabian Socialist backed Governments and their overpaid "Scientists" that have sinister agendas. I guess u believe that fraud Al Gore too..I feel sorry for you.

Here' a start if you really wan't to educate yourself. Don't be a sheeple. http://www.iceagenow.com/

The Canadian economist Ross McKitrick puts it into perspective:

Encouraging people to turn off lights doesn't demonise electricity. It could also be seen as a celebration of how precious it is by not wasting it. We do need to look closer at managing consumption. McKitrick appears to believe that we should turn on all our lights and appliances instead, as if because electricity was a good thing, more and more of it is better.

However, I do believe that these single day conservation events achieve little - in fact they tend to let people off the hook because they made their little "contribution". Some may discover how much electricity they waste and adjust their consumption habits but one suspects they are in the minority.

For sure this website look "pro".... and is clearly full of generalties without any reliable sources and evidences also.

first of all after the public opinion misunderstood the expression "global warming" the scientists (not only the overpaid socialist ones as you seem to say) agreed to speak about "climate change".

Yes human impact on weather and climate, believe it or not. Even a big city warmth caused by pollution and other warming factors (like AC in tropics) have a significant impact on local weather.

To get back to the story, yes Earth Hour is important, not only for nature but also for savings. Maybe you re used to leave all lights opened in your house or let the tv and other devices on "stand by mode" instead of completly turn them off. Believe it or not but oil is getting more and more expensive, energy produced by fossil ressource is also not forever. This hour is alsoa way to raise awarness...apparently without any effect on you...

Nobody pointed out that the exceptionally cold weather in Thailand may have helped as people were not so kind on using air-cond anyway.

Re the Canada, I think most of their electricity of coming for hydro, renewable, zero carbon, so of course they don't really care about the electricity saving thing.

I guess in the 5 minutes that you looked at the site you have come to this conclusion? There are hundred's of hrs of reading and videos on this site, most by professional Scientists and other peer reviewed people. (Not the ones that are paid by Fabian Socialist Governments, IPCC, UN, and that Fraud Al Gore et al). But keep your head in the sand as some people do not want to find out the truth about this costly scam.

Encouraging people to turn off lights doesn't demonise electricity. It could also be seen as a celebration of how precious it is by not wasting it.

Yes, but by and large, the Green/Left folks don't 'encourage' people to turn off electricity; they moralize and sermonize ("Let's Go Dark For Earth Hour: Save our Planet"), and pose as the wise teacher scolding the naughty children who are electricity users and are not in tune with "saving the planet" (whatever that is supposed to mean).

They are then so puffed up with self-righteousness that they make absurd and ignorant claims:

"Earth Hour has evolved so much over the past five years," Mr O'Gorman [chief executive of the World Wildlife Fund Australia ]said. "It's gone from a small idea to something which is now embraced by 131 countries and hundreds of billions of people."
