A student asked me about the word 'rampant' the other day, I said as an adjective it meant widespread or a lot of and was negative, usually referring to crime. It led to a conversation about positive and negative adjectives

She said สิ่งใดคุณอนันต์ ย่อมมีโทษมหันต์ - something that has high value or worth can also hurt you a lot.

อนันต์ means a lot in a positive way, whilst มหันต์ means a lot in a negative sense.

Perhaps other posters can think of similar examples.

"อ" is the universal negator. From the RID:

อ ๒ /อะ/ เป็นอักษรใช้นำหน้าคำที่มาจากบาลีและสันสกฤต บอกความปฏิเสธหรือตรงกันข้าม แปลว่า ไม่ หรือ ไม่ใช่ เช่น อศุภ (ไม่งาม) อธรรม (ไม่ใช่ธรรม).ใช้เป็น อน เมื่ออยู่หน้าคำที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยสระ เช่น อเนก (อน + เอก) อนาจาร (อน + อาจาร).

This prefix is used for Pali and Sanskrit words to indicate negation or opposition. Examples other than those noted above are:

กรรม - อกรรม (active - passive)

นิยม - อนิยม (usual - unusual)

ยุติธรรม - อยุติธรรม (just - unjust)

สัญญี - อสัญญี (conscious - unconscious)

กุศล - อกุศล (virtuous - evil)

etc.
