Land Rover Defender Is Coming!

Just read in the bkk post: Land rover is going to produce a version of the defender locally, and they want to make a model that qualifies for the 3% excise tax rate for pick-ups.

Might be just in time for me to relace our trusty Fortuner. Or Fortunner / Fortuna as it's often called on these forums.

If they make a SUV version I am sold. Even a pick up version... the Defender is one of my favorite cars.... And it would be sold here for the normal price, rather than the 2x or more for imported cars.

The Defender 90/110 was awesome. Utilitarian bad-ass. I'm a big fan of Land Rover, so I hope that the 2014 re-design doesn't come out trying to be cool and end up failing (Freelander anyone?????). I love the old Range Rover P38 and the current RR Sport. Despite their electrical issues, you just gotta love 'em: post-68285-0-80792900-1302256185_thumb.j

mmmmmmm!!! (gotta drive RRs in pairs (at least) cuz you never know when one is going to break down haha - Land Rover ownership, nothing else comes close!!! :P )

Hmmmm target is 500 vehicle per year CKD at an assembly plant in Laem Chabang, we already import/export LR products I wonder if the facility in Laem Chabang is ours, we certainly have the room to do such a thing.

cant they just bring some good old jeep wranglers from the late 90's early 2000's in good condition instead :\

Who'd have thought that notbritish would prefer a Jeep to a Land Rover?! ;)

I don't quite think the video is fair. Comparing one modded vehicle to another modded vehicle is not the same as comparing stock to stock. Both the Jeep and the Land Rover stock couldn't get up that hill. Looks like the Land Rover owner modded his rig better.

Of course I have nothing against Land Rover, and wouldn't mind owning one. But for those of us growing up in the USA, the Jeep is what we grew up with, not the Land Rover. And let's face it, British automotive engineering left a bad taste in the mouth of alot of Americans. Think reliability of 70's and 80's Jaguars. Think Lucas electrical system. Not that American cars were that much better engineered, but at least you didn't have to wait for parts to be shipped from across the ocean.

that was basically a modded land rover with a more competent driver vs a jeep with bigger wheels than normal and a newbie driver. Anyways in thailand the point of having a jeep, is the fun of it and knowing that when a crazy thai driver goes to hit you, you can just jump in the ditch and survive with your car ;)

Jeep was legendary. 50, 60 years ago. More recently, it was legendary for failing.

A friend of mine in the US had bought a Jeep Cherokee. It broke down a lot until that one day when the engine caught on fire and the car burned out!

I've never had a land rover and admittedly they have a pretty terrible rep for quality too. But at least the Defender looks cool :)

No 4wd in the world will beat Land Rovers comfort and off road abilty, i admit, other manufactors have tried, but in comparrision, against the Land Rover, they are made of cheese..

The Defender is the model that is most similar to a real Land Rover isn't it? Not one of those nancy, urban, trip to the club disasters?

That must be a Land Rover commercial. I've taken Jeeps up slopes twice that steep. Having more Jeep than sense, in my younger days I've flipped them over backwards on nearly vertical slopes. Thank God for seat belts, roll cages.... and beer.

I had a couple of Jeep Cherokees in the early 90's. I'll tell you something. Worst f'ing gas mileage of any vehicle I ever owned, but they were the best offroad of any vehicle, period. Near perfect weight distribution. Unfortunately mine were all too new to really mess them up as much as I generally like to do, or like I would a CJ, but I'm telling you, if you don't care how the body looks when you get to the other side, that Cherokee won't let you down.

that was only because the didn't have enough containers for the parts needed.

I think we are talking about the replacement for that model. Its had that boxy shape for decades lets hope they don't alter it significantly. I suspect it'll be more a kin to the latest Discovery. These things will sell.

Yep, the new Defender will be based on the Disco platform.

I have had Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees, and I have had Land Rover/Range Rover from 88 inch wheelbase to 130 inch wheelbase. Offorad Land Rover are unbeatable. On road Range Rover are.

If they are aiming at 3% excice it must be pickup build on frame/chassie, leaf springs, wheelbase more than 280cm and load 1.000 kg. Present Disco is a moncoque, as is present Range Rover

Frame, coil/ airsprings and 7 seat SUV is 20% excicetax

Monocoque 3000cc is 50% excicetax

I suspect them to want to build present Defender design in LOS when they retire it in UK, as it can easily be modded to fit Thai excicetax requirements. an 130 inch wheelbase Defender pickup already exists

Errrm its actually semi monocoque, the body can be seperatedfrom the chassis, here we are doing the turbos on a disco 4.

Submaniac lol... the Wrangler? It's a nice car......

.... for your girlfriend :P

....(or teenage daughter) :)

If I could bring back any Jeep it would be the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited. Torque beast and went like hell out of a dig. We can get serious snow where I'm from, and that 5.9 Limited would go tear up a blizzard in short order. QuadraTrac on those Jeeps was IMO a very good system. No flashy gadgets, just press the gas and the 5.9 took you there. Transmission - well, you probably have to change it once or twice jap.gif

Land Rovers (RR, Discovery, Defender - Freelander is a joke) do very well off-road, that is without question. They also have a presence that other cars just don't have. I don't like to take sides in any Jeep/LR discussion - I just take one of each :)

I hope LR keeps the Defender simple and boxy. Land Rover makes boxy sexy cool.gif

Most interesting, must admit I have never been underneath last gen disco/RR. But in press materials they are described as monocoques. Used to have some Citroen CX Break (estate) made 1974-1989 as I recall, and they had a help frame where suspension, engine, transmission and brake pipes where installed. Could be separated from the body. But when attaching a tow bar, it was bolted to the body, not the frame.

member Deerall claims to have worked RR developing to monocoque as I recall, perhaps he could enlighten us?

Since I know you are big into LR, I am going to call bias on this one! :P

:) That's fair!

I was just jokin' with you in the first place - I know you're a cool dude submaniac, we've hit the bar together in the old days with girlx, RJT, yasx, and thithi - rememba?

kata - I think I've heard that in order to access the turbos on the LR4, you have to separate the frame and chassis as spoonman indicated... genius LR engineering, eh? haha.... Though I bet the Thais have found a way to do it without separation.... many people bash Thais for things, but in my experience, some of the specialist Thai mechanics are very resourceful and tops in their field. I trust mine 110%. Next time I'm in for service i'll ask about the LR4 (but my guy is a P38 specialist).

It hasnt been easy for LR engineers past decades as the change of owners have dictated different engines to be used. LR Buick engine/VM diesel-BMW-Ford decided engines-Tata the latter fortunately back to its UK roots with partly Jag engines

Now that would make sense. a 130 defender pickup will do nicely Sir, especially if it can compete on price with the currently available pickups.
