Former Egyptian leader Mubarak and his sons detained for questioning

CAIRO, EGYPT (BNO NEWS) -- Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons on Wednesday were detained in jail for questioning over the charges filed against them.

According to the Al-Ahram newspaper, Prosecutor-General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud decided on early Wednesday that Mubarak and his sons Alaa and Gamal will be in jail for the next 15 days pending investigations.

The three individuals will be questioned on April 14a by Mahmoud. The former president is accused of ordering the killing of protesters in Tahrir Square during the January 25 Revolution as well as many abuse of power and illicit profiteering counts.

Alaa and Gamal Mubarak are charged with profiteering, wasting public funds and illegally accumulating wealth. The two brothers said they were in a state of "disbelief" in regards to their 15-day imprisonment.

On Tuesday, Mubarak was rushed to the Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital after suffering a minor heart-attack. The former president was scheduled to appear before authorities to be questioned over financial and power abuse charges in South Sinai.

On Sunday, Mubarak spoke publicly for the first time in a pre-recorded statement after a two-month silence. He denied all charges against him and expressed his willingness to cooperate with the prosecutor-general.

Due to his delicate health, Jordan offered an invitation to Mubarak to receive medical treatment in Amman. However, authorities rejected the offer as the ousted leader was under house arrest.

Mubarak, who ruled Egypt in a 30-year-long regime which began in 1981, stepped down after weeks of anti-government protests by crowds calling for greater democracy and respect of human rights.

On Saturday, hundreds of Egyptians defied soldiers who tried to disperse them from Tahrir Square and vowed to keep protesting until ex-President Mubarak is prosecuted and other demands met. At least one person was killed, 71 injured, and 42 arrested.
