FWIW, if you carry a U.S. passport you will need a visa to travel to Brazil. I imagine you could get one from the Brazilian embassy/consulate here in Bangkok?

Fares to Brazil are always high - have been so for years. It's a looong trip even if you fly Thai Int'l. BKK to Cape Town and then Sao Paulo then Rio. When I was living down there it woud take me better than 24 hours in the air from Rio to BKK - a real long-ass trip but it's worth it. Try to get over to Foz Iguacu on the Paraguay/Argintina/Brazil border. Largest waterfalls in the world (Angel Falls is taller).

54,000 Return (including tax). Brazil is a long way! I don't think you can get cheaper than that. The only other way I suggest is get a cheap ticket to LA and perhaps beforehand you could do some research to see what the prices are like LA - Brazil return. Perhaps it couldbe cheaper buying 2 tickets.

I know the OP wasn't asking about visas but they will have to plan their itinerary very carefully. I am fairly certain that a visa is required for the U.S.A. even if in transit. (There used to be a Transit Without Visa, TWOV, in the U.S.A. but that has been suspended for a few years.) I am not sure how it might work transiting FRA or LHR on a westbound itinerary. The suggested fare, above, on South African Airways (or codeshared with Cathay?) via HKG and JNB should be ok for a Thai citizen, a U.S. citizen can obtain a visa upon arrival/transit in South Africa. Speaking of South Africa, it might be a easier destination? TG was talking about direct flights starting up but I have not followed this, and they may have been put on hold given the financial difficulties? I am pretty sure a Thai citizen can travel to South Africa without a visa? I've flown SQ for JNB-SIN so you could definitely go BKK-SIN-JNB return.

Yes, that's correct. A visa for the US would be required even if one was only changing planes at a US airport while enroute to some other country.

I would think that flights to anywhere in South America would generally be the most expensive routes from this part of the world. You can probably scratch the idea of getting there cheaply.

You should try and visit Parati near Rio. - Link:-

Parati

I am sure you will find the country fascinating !

There is a security problem though. Always dress casual and not like a tourist.

Don't carry any mobiles or credit cards. Have them locked in the hotel safe.

Good chances are that you will not have a problem. There are some areas of Rio de Janeiro to be avoided. It is not as safe as Thailand but you will find more to see and do. The people are friendly and the music wonderful.

The cheapest way is probably to get the cheapest flight to Paris or London.

There are good deals from Lisbon but I don't think there are any direct flights from BKK. Same problem with Madrid. A lot of flights are quoted via Frankfurt.

You could fly to Miami and fly down from there but I don't know if your Thai BF can transit via the US without a visa? I doubt whether a visa is needed for a transit flight?

58,000 Baht sounds about right for November but 90,000 Baht for December. There is an English chap who runs a Travel agency in Soi 11 Sukhumwit. He is very good I am told. :o

Okay I flew this route from BKK via Europe to Sao Paulo or to Rio de Janeiro many times. The fare is about always about 45000-58000 including tax on more decent airlines. Price depends on the season and on the travel agency. I always take KLM vis Amsterdam, or Lufthansa via Frankfurt, but you can also choose Alitalia, British Airways, Air France, also many code sharing flights including Varig, Tam, and many other south American or European airlines. But because I have milege of KLM and Lufthansa so I stick with these two. But the shortest route is from BKK-Johannesburg-Sao Paulo or Rio, but this route can be more expensive and less frequent than thru Europe.

I usually walk around Silom or Pratunam and get quotes from various agencies. Even the same airline and same routing can differ by 10000 in various agencies. So visit as many agencies as you can and get quotes of your prefered airlines or simply the cheapest fare.

If your are Thai, then you can stay 3 months visa free. If you are from EU then same 3 month visa free with extentable up to 6 months in Brasil.

Brasil is a huge country of diversity. December is the peak season. Chrismas and summer there. Popular destinations are Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Fortaleza, Sao Paulo, Florianopolis, ect ect. Thousands of beautiful beach towns along the coast.

Some of my favorite beach towns in Brasil are Angra dos Reis, Buzios,(in state of Rio), Guaruja, Bertioga,Ilha Bella, Sao Lourenco, all the Santos coast ect (in state of Sao Paulo), also in the northeast Olinda, Fortaleza, Salvador, Recife are very popular with North Europeans, and the south has the beatiful city of Florianopolis with hundreds of beaches in the city is my favorite. Its in the southern state of Santa Catarina with huge foriegn tourists from Argentina, Germany, and north Europe ect. Of course the city of Rio is definitely the most beautiful city in the whole world.

Try the Brasilian BBQ, churrasco too. There are churrascaria everywhere. You will fall in love with this huge country. Just like me and all my family love going there and my brother loves Brasil so much he sold everything in Danmark and moved there for 7 years already and got his permanent residency 3 year ago. I will be going there again in possibly November.

Talking about Brazil , i think that brazil have very good beaches and the exchange rate is an very good advantages for tourist ( 1 american dollar is around 3 reales ) . I can say that Florianá`polis is beautiful , It is in the South of Brazil and there are a lot of argentinian there in Junuary and Febreary. However the beautiful beaches are in the North of brazil in Bahia with blue sea and white sand.

Althought Brazilian prefer the beaches of Rio de Janeiro like Angra dos Reis and Paraty. If you go to Rio de janeiro you will have to go in February beacause the Carnival is in Febreary an it is worth going.

As Boo said BKK is so far away to Brazil so the fly are always hight but if you are looking for accomodation or hotel PM back and i wil send you the address of one of the travel agency that i usually call .

hmmm it sounds great! i think i might have to put the trip off til spring though, as indeed december is high season and that means all the prices are up in general... plus if i want to take a 24 hour flight i might as well go home first. thanks for the info though! i will keep it in mind for when i do go!

A Swedish friend just came back from Sao Paulo to BKK last week. He paid 56000 bahts total roundtrip. Took Thai Airways then Varig transfered in London. Member of Star Alliance can choose fly this pattern. A while ago another German friend of my flyed Japan Airline with promotion fare into Sao Paulo for 55000 bahts. BKK-Tokyo-Sao Paulo, a few more hours of flying than thru Europe, but can collect more miles too. He said Jal had great service and great meals with all seats with individual audio and video including movies and games. In November when I go I think I may try this routing for a change. Can collect milege for One World Alliance members. Also for reference I got a quote for Lufhansa for BKK-Frankfurt(transit)-Sao Paulo or Rio for 57000 bahts in Nov.

It is unlikely that you will be able to fly to Brasil without going via either US Europe or Australia all who may require one of you to have visa for you even to sit on their beloved tarmac, without even getting off the plane which is unlikely, sorry not interested in visas, fares? no you will not get deal to Brasil from Thailand

Brazil beaches are beautiful, and the ones in Rio are OK...but can't swim as they are heavily polluted. Security is a real issue. Be very careful. The recent thing are roving groups of male homeless kids that steal you blind. Happened several times when I was there.

We we left to head north, we had to get a bus as our taxi driver (one we had used all week, including trips way down south) would not go very far out of Rio. Just too dangerous with freeway bandidt. Crazy...

Brazil is a long way...it is a very tough flight.

Have you thought about a round the world ticket? For £960 in the UK you can fly unlimited stops for 29,000 miles with 3 airlines who are singapore air, virgin and air new zeland, In bangkok I believe the fares are much cheaper than this so check them as the ticket is also valid for a year, you could do brazil with miles to spare at a much lower price, I usually fly to bkk or manila from UK and pay from £380-£580 for my flight, next flight i am purchasing a round the world as i dont intend comming back to the uk and I can use to visit autralia and singapore at a much cheaper price.

Good luck

Untamed:

Your friend has to search the best fare from Brasil himself. If he is in Sao Paulo, there are tons and tons of ticket agents in Centro, Liberdade, Paulista, Republica, Consulacao, ect ect. tell him to get quotes from many agents and compare and also check the newspaper travel page.

He will find something cheaper than the others but the price will be more less 1200-1500 USD round trip, SP-BKK-SP.
