Hi all,

I've just started the paperwork for my wife and stepson's UK settlement application and just need to clarify a few points.

1. Online application only?

I read yesterday that you need to apply online if the country supports it - correct or not? I was hoping to complete all the paperwork including the VAF4A for her here in the UK, UPS it to the wife in LOS and then have her go to VFS and join the queue, submit the application, biometrics, pay the fee and go home and wait. Ok to do it this way?

2. Do all Thai docs need to be translated into English or not? Blue house book and the boy's birth certificate are the only two that spring to mind atm.

3. Evidence of me being on the electoral role in the UK? Also, no council tax bill yet.

4. No utility bills yet.I've only just moved into my house and haven't had any of the bills changed into my name yet. If I explain this in the application is that good enough? A letter and tenancy agreement from the landlord, bank statements, mobile bills, Sky etc will show me as resident at the address we'll be living at. Ok?

5. Last but not least, financials.

Combined savings of nearly 40K GBP but I've had to find another job quickly and it only pays 11K approx pa.Only started this job 3 weeks ago so all I'll have is a letter from the company owner and 1 month's payslip. Is that going to be ok?

Sorry for the long list guys, I should have sorted all of this already but I've been up to my neck in other things.

Thanks a lot,

SL.

Just to add to question 1, if I have to apply online, how long do we have before my wife has to schedule an appointment at VFS? As I said, I'm trying to do everything for my wife from the UK, so, if I make an online application, print it off and send to her along with all other supporting docs its going to take a few days. Are we ok waiting until she's received them before scheduling an appointment at VFS?

I would not schedule the appointment until she has her TB certificate as she could be required to attend daily at 8am or something silly for four days in a row. You can however reschedule online.

What I did was to do a dummy visa application to get a code number which allows you to see just how far ahead the appointments are. Mickey Mouse, 1 Disneyland etc.

I used Fed Ex. I find it better than UPS.

You can get bills in your name with just a simple phone call. They will send you some paperwork in a matter of days. Get on top of that now. Same with Council Tax. Banks - change your address and print out online statements etc. if you don't have originals.

We didn't translate anything except the marriage stuff.

Cover the main points well. History together, where you will live (lease - make sure it extends past 12 weeks as this is the theoretical maximum waiting time), work, bank statements, do an income / expenditure statement to show you can cover the extra costs etc.

Get your passport copied and certified. You can self certify.

If you don't have a scanner / printer then buy one. If they want extra documents, you can scan them and email them. Items which you may not have to hand can be scanned later and emailed when you get her reference code after her interview.

Have a look at some of the pinned checklists on here.

Just to add, you can send all the documents, wait for her to get her TB certificate and then make the appointment yourself online and email her the confirmation which she can print out at her end.

Thanks for the reply and advise SGD.

They actually went for their TB tests yesterday - no problems there. Next job for her is the English test which she's trying to book asap.

Self-certify my own passport copies? Are they ok with that? Kind of defeats the object of certification doesn't it?

1) Although How to apply says that settlement applications can only be completed online, anecdotal evidence suggests that this is not the case and she can simply turn up. Bear in mind that the only way to make an appointment is via the online system and if she simply turns up she may be in for a long wait.

She must have all her supporting documents when she goes, including as SGD says her TB certificate, plus her evidence of meeting the English language requirement. So if booking an appointment online I'd suggest waiting until she has those before doing so.

2) The VAC site says yes, but again anecdotal evidence suggests that official documents, such as birth certificates and your marriage certificate, don't have to be. However, it is worth getting translations of these anyway as you may need them in the UK and having them done in Thailand will be a lot cheaper than in the UK.

3) Not needed.

4) Utility bills are not needed. Your tenancy agreement and landlord's letter showing that she has permission to live there and that there is room for you is enough. You mention 'the boy.' If he is coming as well then this letter needs to confirm that he can also live there and that there is room for him, too.

5) Evidence of your savings plus the letter from your new employer confirming your salary will be fine.

Edit:

Self certification is fine. Simply write "I certify that this is a true copy of passport number xxxxxxxxxxx in the name of Mr. xxxxxxxxx" and sign and date it.

Beats paying a solicitor to do it!

Remember to include the page with your photo and personal details on plus any pages with Thai entry and exit stamps; to show how often you have visited her. I also reckon it's a good idea to include the blank pages as well, just to show that they are blank.
