Cabinet to End Assistance Measures for Tourism Industry

After reviewing several policies implemented to stimulate the tourism industry, the cabinet has decided to discontinue three such measures as the sector has recovered significantly.

Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silapaarcha said the cabinet will not extend the three measures for assisting the tourist industries, as the situation normalizes.

The three measures included exemption of visa fees for foreign tourists, reduced landing and parking fees at the airport, and insurance for foreign tourists in case of being affected by riots or other violence.

The measures were implemented in the first three months of the year, and have accomplished their intended task.

Moreover, the Cabinet has approved plans for the Tourism Authority of Thailand or TAT to turn two other measures into permanent ones.

One measure is to allow tourists who stop in Thailand for connecting flights to travel within the country under a time limit.

The other measure is for administrators to hold seminars on a permanent basis.

For corporations that grant gift vouchers for their employees to travel domestically, the government will allow corporations to use the cost of vouchers to deduct tax by twice as much.

The measure is scheduled to end on March 31 of 2012.

As for the private sector's complaint over government organizations launching cut-throat priced packaged tours to steal customers, the relevant authorities have vowed to look into the matter.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has assigned the TAT and the Tourism and Sports Ministry to talk with China and Taiwan to consider canceling visa requirements between the three countries, as previous trials have increased the number of Chinese and Taiwanese tourists in Thailand by more than 100,000.
