thanks for this nice summary!

After checking all info and websites however I'm not seeing expressly stated that this offer is for unlimited access. I see unlimited time mentioned, but not unlimited data traffic.

Can you confirm that there is no data traffic limit for this offer? I can download and surf as much as I want, and get pumped through the wires / air / satelite dish ...

If yes, and it is really unlimited data at 256/128 kbps for 1500 / month, then which is the best place to order it?

Should I try a local dealer, or central loxinfo, or...?

Thanks,

yuyi

ALMOST NOW!! BE PATIENT - MRS. MOUSE IS WORKING ON SETTING THIS UP

Then again Mrs. Mouse is not know for her punctuality or her ability to get things done quickly. But then she took her time having our three kids and they all turned out great. Patience would be the word!!

Based on the many questions and email on this subject, this is for everyone's information (not intended as an ad for that will come later):

Mrs. Mouse is in the final stages of activating a firm that specializes in the solving ipStar problems and also as an agent for ipStar agent specializing in working with farang in Asia. She will respond to Italian, German and English email at her upcoming website.

The whole operation should be an operational entity by sometime in November. Her website will be HERE but, I believe that it cannot be totally activated, (however an email links does exist there) until the contract with ipStar is finalized. Once that happens you will see her ads and be able to chat with her on ThaiVisa forum a lot, ready to help you resolve your satellite connection problems, even if you signed up before or with another agent.

Yuyi and everyone - Everytime you ask a question like that, you make Mrs. Mouse's heart jump a mile. She just called ipStar twice (with two seperate GSM phone) to check and yes it will be unlimited I/O on the 1,500 baht promotional package. You can email her directly at [email protected] to get English/Thai forms or other support. But she will not be an authorized agent for a few more days to come.

Also she stated that the promtion that you speak of, will start in November and run until the end of that month.

Hope that helps with your question.

How long will this promotional package be operational?

Will it be just like the TT&T MaxNET offers that had everyone madly signing up for good deals and then pulling the plug on the download times after the promotional period has finished?

Response straight from Mrs. Mouse:

Such pessimism! (spelling) You obviously have lived here too long! I recommend a vacation to your home country to see how messed up the rest of the world has become in the last decade.

Of course the offer is available as a one year contract initially, at which time there will be renewal at what I am sure will be competitive rates.

Good answer... maybe she's right :o

Do you know anything about possible new deals from ISP's once they get the new recently launched satellite in position and operational?

Do you know anything about possible new deals from ISP's once they get the new recently launched satellite in position and operational?

me and Mrs. Mouse were speaking to a very realiable source this morning and he indicated that he was under the impression that there was a push to get customers to ASDL or Satellite and that they were wanting to raise package prices to get customers to do that. I cannot of course confirm the story but, it makes sense. Someone has to pay for the Satellite and of course the Research and Developement that went into it. We say many negative things about Thailand but, I must stand up and say they in this department they are leading the pack in Asia.

Another cosnideration is the cost of maintaining the dialup system and the associated costs, when ADSL or ipStar practically eliminates that cost.

I envision upcoming moves as being: Sending Internet access through the electrical grid of Thailand and also WIMAX being deployed in the next few years throughout the country. The last mile concept will rule and ipStar will become the main supplier in Asia of broadband in one form or another. Remember what I said!

I can confirm that. Loxinfo has in their agencies a new flyer, which has about the same content and structure as the flyer above, but it says clearly "Unlimited data" on top of it, thus it is for all offers. Plus it mentions the 1500 (instead of 2500) baht promotion for November. :D Yes, unlimited data, and yes 1500 baht / month

They can accept orders, but need about one month for delivery. It is not clear though if it is a Thai month (which is often used in situations where Farangs tend to use "year") or a Western month. :o

IPStar Thailand gateway opens

New Zealand coming soon

Shin Satellite's new, high-powered broadband communications satellite project, IPStar, has opened the first of 14 planned international gateways.

According to Shin chairman, Dr Dumrong Kasemset, the opening signals the readiness of the company to commence transferring bandwidth capacity to its National Service Operator in Thailand, TOT Plc, which will sell the bandwidth on to other service providers around the country and for its own use in network expansion.

IPStar has three retailers lined up in New Zealand -- rural services oriented BayCity, business solutions oriented Iconz and innovative implementation specialist Natcom.

“This is a day that we have been looking forward to after many years of hard work,” said Dr Kasemset.

“With the official gateway opening, we are in business and expect to be providing service in Thailand wherever the customers are.

“The IPSTAR system will serve up to 300,000 subscribers in Thailand, especially in areas outside of the reach of conventional networks.

"For the first time, they will be able to enjoy a variety of broadband and other internet protocol based applications, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPN), Satellite News Gathering (SNG), video-conferencing and rural telephone services. This is the first of many gateways we plan to open around the Asia Pacific Region.”

The Thailand gateway is based at Shin Satellite’s teleport at Lad Lum Kaew, in Pathum Thani, a province just outside Bangkok.

Scheduled for opening in mid-November, the New Zealand gateway is located in Albany.

Why do you think that the FTA went through without a hitch?

BkkMike,

Unfortunately, it would be completely illegal in Thailand.

The Thai government will not allow any form of internet access bypassing the Communications Authority of Thailand, and hence their blocking system of unwanted sites.

Simple for them to do, they just refuse to certify the transceiver needed to communicate with the satellite.

Anybody caught importing an uncertified transceiver of any kind, and gets caught at customs, will face havy fines, confiscation of equipment and possible refusal of entry into Thailand.

Anybody trying to smuggle anything into Thailand resembling a transmitter is rather daft!

Why can't we simply subscribe to any of the other satellite internet services with a footprint over Thailand??? Speeds of up to 1mbps are available at this moment...

TIT

Don't think you're right on that one, as foreign reporters are already using Inmarsat satellite phones (with data capability - although only 144Kbps) in Thailand. How do you think CNN and the BBC did their Tsunami coverage from reporters in Phuket last year...

One of Inmarsat's earth stations is located in Bangkok as well, so it's fairly obvious their existing services are legal here.

Finally - we're talking about a portable receiver, the size of a laptop computer. Do you really think they're going to stop, for instance, wealthy tourists taking in equipment to use while on holiday to talk to the office. i.e. I know an MD of a US bank who comes to Thailand on holiday every 2-3 years. One time (a few years ago) he couldn't get the office VPN working through the phone numbers the VPN software had in it's Thailand section, so he simply dialled internationally to his home country (on a hotel phone line. - i.e. Cost isn't a big issue).

If Inmarsat really do release portable satellite broadband access - I can see the big banks actually having them in stock for the use of travelling executives. If nothing else, they can set it up and check it's working before they go... And if Thailand won't let the equipment in, they'll go to the Maldives, or Tahiti, or the Seychelles, or...

(there are quite a few MDs - MD does NOT mean CEO - it did mean you could choose to fly Concorde on business, and can still choose to travel first class rather than business class. It's not in the realm of private jets, but it still means you make quite a lot of money.)

I do agree you probably won't be able to buy them in Thailand, and you may require an address/credit card in a country like the US/EU for billing. But I still think you'll end up seeing them in use here...

www.ipstar.michelonia.com

After weeks of consideration, asking for many advertising estimates and much discussion with ipStar, Mrs. Mouse and myself have come to the conclusion that it is not in our financial interest to open a company in Thailand or to act as an agent for ipStar.

Since we already designed the website, we have deceided to continue assisisting members of this forum, that wish to sign up for the services, by offering totally free assistance, again for the members of this forum and this forum only.

At the website, located HERE you will be able to download forms, find out additional application requirements, learn where to send the completed forms and learn the contact information of the right person at ipStar. Also on the site you can make contact with us and we will give free advise as to how to obtain the service.

We believe that by being totally free, only dealing with our friends, that are members of this forum, we remain within the letter of the law.

We hope that this free method allows us to gracefully bow out of our offer to start such a bussiness, but, continue to help out the forum members. Even if we had a onehundred and fifty customers a year, we would not yet break even in such a venture!

Another update - Seems that the 1,500 baht plan will only be extended for the first 200 customers only. Hmmm! Not the original word but, then I do not own or run the company. All changes have been refelected in their partially updated website at http://www.csloxinfo.com/broadband/ipstar4_en.asp#1

Their offerd hosting and other services seem a little......... well the word expensive tends to certainly come to mind. If looking for better priced hosting, domain name services and numerous email accounts contact me. I know of some fantastic deals from numeorus agencies. I had to contact one of the Managers at CSLOXINFO about another matter and confirmed that the traffic for all plans is still unlimited.

I have this in writing!!!

  • 2 weeks later...
Those of you experiencing problems with their ipStar connection!!!! If you are using Firefox make sure that you do not use ADBLOCK. I re-created the problems that some users were experincing (30 seconds on then off) and only after turning off ADBLOCK did I get my sysyem back to normal. I am pretty sure that is the culprit. I will let them know that their extension is what is causing a problem for some of us.

Back to normal as of noon today. When I talked to the helpdesk I told them to stop repairing what is not broken. Seems that the night and weekend shifts get bored and try to tweak the system and it takes the day shift to come in and run a restore or the system by install the backup. OR SO IT SEEMS!

if it ain't broke do not fix it!

what is worse is that at least 10% of the customers rebuild their systems thinking it is them and create more errors on top of the errors courtesy of ipStar!

  • 2 weeks later...

NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE

Seems that ipStar is falling behind in installing the many customer recently aquired due to a lack of all required hardware being readily available. Guess they were not ready for a large influx of new clients. Things will level out within two weeks by which time they hope to have caught up on work orders.

Note there are several conditions attached to this offer:

- offer valid until 1 November

- must sign up for min. 12 months or face cancellation fee of 3,000 baht

- installation charge min. 3,000 baht

- probably equipment charge/deposit

- probably restrictions on bandwidth, something like 750 mb/m seems likely

I agree. Not as good as it sounded at first, but may be worth while if you are out of range

of any other ADSL service.
