Economy Thailand Aims for Leadership in Future Food Production
File photo for reference only Thailand, a top exporter of rice, sugar, chicken, and seafood, is broadening its aspirations to become a leader in future food production, an industry encompassing functional foods, medical and personalised foods, alternative proteins, and organic options. Functional foods, like beverages enhanced with Thai herbs such as lemongrass and ginger, offer health benefits like immunity boosts. Alternative proteins, including plant-based meats, appeal to eco-conscious consumers and those seeking health-focused diets. The post-COVID-19 shift towards healthier, sustainable eating has accelerated growth in this sector, with future food now comprising around 9% of Thailand's food exports. Smith Taweelerdniti, Managing Director of Nithi Foods and Vice President of the Thai Future Food Trade Association, shared insights at the Fi Asia & Vitafoods Asia 2025 networking event in Chiang Mai. He reported that functional foods and ingredients lead exports, valuing at 11.53 billion baht, followed by medical and personalised food, alternative proteins, and organic food. Key export markets include ASEAN countries, China, the USA, and the EU. Despite robust exports, domestic consumption remains a challenge. Taweelerdniti highlighted the need for increased local adoption to cement Thailand's future food industry leadership. To tackle this, the ‘Wen Day on Wednesday’ campaign was launched, encouraging Thais to forgo meat for plant-based alternatives each Wednesday, promoting sustainable dietary habits. Additionally, initiatives like SPACE-F, a food tech incubator, foster innovation by developing startups in the future food sector. Supported by the National Innovation Agency, Thai Union, and Mahidol University, SPACE-F is pivotal in driving Thailand's transformation into a hub for food technology and sustainable dietary practices. Through these efforts, Thailand seeks to expand its influence not just as the "kitchen of the world," but as a pioneering force in the future food industry, promoting health, sustainability, and innovation both domestically and internationally.
