QUETTA, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Unknown gunmen on Friday opened fire on a group of people, killing 8 and injuring at least 15 others in Baluchistan province, western Pakistan, the APP news agency reported.

The suspected militants arrived in a pick-up truck and shot at a group of people in Hazara town graveyard, in the provincial capital Quetta. After the shooting attack the gunmen fled the scene.

Many law enforcement agents were rushed to the site and cordoned off the entire area. An investigation was launched as well as a search operation. Eight people died on the scene.

In addition, at least 15 more individuals were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital. Police said that the death toll could rise as some of the pounded are reproved to be in serious condition.

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan strongly condemned the indiscriminate attack in Quetta. The eight civilians killed were doing morning exercise when they were attacked without apparent cause.

"This attack underscores the threat that terrorism poses to Pakistan and all nations of the world. All must stand together in common purpose and take resolute action to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat terrorist organizations," said U.S. Embassy spokesperson Alberto Rodriguez.
