Seven militants killed by security forces in Russia's North Caucasus

MOSCOW (BNO NEWS) -- Seven militants were killed on Sunday during a large-scale security operation in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, RIA Novosti reported.

A local police source said that one soldier was killed and three riot police officers were injured during the operation in a forest in the Kizlyar district in northern Dagestan.

Earlier reports claimed that police encountered a group of militants during a mop-up operation. In the battle that followed, three militants were killed while a fourth one was trying to escape.

More that a decade after the end of a federal war against separatists in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, Russian security forces continue to fight militants. They carry frequent attacks on security forces, police and civilians as they are still looking to establish an independent state in the North Caucasus region.
