Hi,

I am looking into going to Ayutthaya for a bit of relaxation and sightseeing.

I would like to stay somewhere not to far from the attractions but somewhere where i can have a seat, relax preferably a balcony overlooking something serene and nice like the river for example, somewhere I can chill. I would rather guesthouse bungalow type accommodation rather than hotels.

Some recomendations would be good of actual guesthouses or a general area to stay in.

Can you rent motorbikes there?

Also any recommendations on things not to be missed whilst there.

Thanks alot in advance. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/style_images...icons/icon1.gif

I always liked Tony's Place (035 252578) - not far from the main bus station within the old city, northeast. The best rooms are around 400 baht and come with balconies at the front, but there are cheaper alternatives. Wooden building and, although new, has bags of character and a good restaurant/bar with loads of greenery out the front. They rent out bikes as well (not sure about motorbikes), but a bicycle is all you need for Ayuthaya to be honest.

Wat Phra Mahatat (with the Buddha head in tree) in the centre is the big draw there but also the Elephant Kraal, just outside the boundary of the old city (northeast) and not far from Tony's. Also, Phu Khao Thong Temple (Golden Chedi) - northwest outside the old city again - is easy to get by bike and has cracking views from the top.

Cheers

hi

rent a bike and cycle the town at your leisure.

you can also hire a boat from one of the piers to see some canal life and the temples from a different angle.

Some other places to visit in Ayuttaya:

- Wat Phra Srisanphet. There are several other places nearby as well.

- Wat Yai is a bit out on the SE side of town but worth a visit.

- The National Museum (fairly close to Wat Phra Mahahat) has a nice collection of historical artifacts and treasures. Be sure to take your shoes off before you go in the building.

- And there's the riverside Night Market across from the Post Office where you can kill a little time in the evening.

- Near the main highway to BKK, is a mall. Can't think of the name of it. They have an indoor "floating market" with "canal" and put on some cultural dances.

Can Ayutthaya be done in a day ?  Or is it best seen over a few days ?

totster  :o

It depends on how many places there you want to see. There's a lot to Ayuttaya which easily could take more than a day to take in, especially if you want to do it at a liesurely pace. But sure, a person can see some of the usual hot spots in a day.

My son-in-law's mom lives in Ayuttaya, and we use to stay there quite a bit. She lives near Wat Phra Mahahat. I remember when the filmed the movie, Mortal Combat there. There's a weekend market just a short way from there too. Never seen any tourists there, just locals.

Thanks... I'm thinking of stopping there on the way up to isaan, I'd rather do a day, but don't want to go and not have enough time to see some of the sights..

Hi,

Thanks for the info guys.

I just got back, stayed in the floatel (a house divided into 4 rooms floating on the river).

They have a website: Amporn Floatel

Nice place, basic rooms but with a great balcony equipped with nice seats and cushions with great views over the river (very relaxing). Also just 5 mins walk from the night market which has loads of different foods on offer.

I rented a motorbike for 250bt per day and went to alot of the Wats/prang ruin places.

To be be honest 1 or 2 days is enough of seeing what ends up alot of the same thing. Nice all the same though. :o
