CHHATTISGARH, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- Nine police officers on Tuesday were killed when approximately 250 Naxals attacked them in a jungle in central India, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

A ten-member team of Indian security personnel was sent to Sonabed jungle, in Chhattisgarh state, following reports of Maoist movement in the area. On Monday evening, the policemen were attacked in Gariabandh area along the Chhattisgarh-Orissa border.

The police officers, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pawar, were in their way to Sosing village, about 15 kilometers from the jungle. Nine policemen were killed, including Pawar.

The other security service member went missing and a search was launched in the region. Preliminary reports indicated that a landmine was also detonated when the team was returning last evening.

Inspector General of Police Rajesh Mishra added that between 200 and 250 Naxals were involved in the ambush. In addition, the vehicle in which the security personnel were travelling was destroyed.
