Thai retail group buys Italian department stores

MILAN (AFP) - Thailand's Central Retail Corporation will buy La Rinascente, a historic chain of Italian department stores, for 205 million euros ($293 million) under the terms of a deal announced on Friday.

The R/U holding that controls 97 percent of Rinascente approved the sale to CRC, the property fund Prelios, a leading shareholder, said in a statement.

The heir of the chain's founders, Maurizio Borletti, who holds a four-percent stake in La Rinascente, had tried to oppose the sale but a court in Milan earlier rejected his attempt to block it.

La Rinascente has 11 department stores in Italy's main cities.

Borletti together with Deutsche Bank bought the French chain Le Printemps in 2006 but failed in a bid last year to buy Germany's Karstadt.

New law to protect workers

By The Nation

30156431-01.jpg

Workers should suffer fewer workrelated injuries because employers will face severe punishment violating law thanks to the Safety, Occupational Health and Environments Act 2011, which goes into effect from July 16.

Labour Protection and Welfare Department chief Amporn Nitisiri said yesterday that, after the new law is implemented, other organic laws and regulations will be drafted with regards to more details, such as the standard of occupational healthsafety management and fireprevention requirements. She said this law should benefit workers because state agencies would strictly control establishments for safety standards and employers breaking the law will face more severe jail terms and heavier fines.

Besides establishing the Work Safety Institute, an independent organisation promoting academic works and analysing data to improve the law, a Safety Fund - supported by government subsidies, donations, investment profits and fees - would offer employers loans to improve safety standards, she said.

The department will soon be informing employers and employees about the new law, she added.

Thida to sue DSI for 'false' charges

By The Nation

Chairwoman of the red-shirt movement, Thida Thaworn-seth, has authorised Robert Amsterdam, the lawyer of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, to file a lawsuit against the Department of Special Investigation for making false lese majeste allegations.

Thida said yesterday that she met with Amsterdam in Hong Kong on Thursday to discuss the legal cases against red-shirt leaders. She said Amsterdam had told her not to worry because the government would be held responsible for last year's violence.

She quoted him as also saying that the lese majeste charges were groundless and that the DSI summoning the 19 red-shirt leaders to hear their charges officially next Thursday could be seen as political persecution during an election period.

Meanwhile, Election Commission chairman Apichart Sukhagganond said yesterday that he would file a defamation lawsuit against Pheu Thai MP Prakiat Nasimma.

"He told a groundless and false story that tarnished my reputation," he said, adding that he had not met with Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda as alleged. Apichart went on to say that he was doing his job in a transparent manner, with no partisanship or pressure.

On Thursday, Prakiat asked why Apichart had visited Prem at his Si Sao Thewet residence on Sunday. Many believe Prakiat is making these allegations to imply that the outcome of the voting would be rigged.

Complaint lodged against ESarn Uni senior staff

By The Nation

30156432-01.jpg

A complaint accusing the rector and senior management of ESarn University of public fraud was yesterday lodged with Khon Kaen police, kicking off legal action against them over the socalled "diploma sales" scandal.

The Office of the Higher Education Commission also supplied 500 pages of documents with its complaint to back up its allegations against the rector, the dean of the graduate study faculty and other management and staff.

Meanwhile the Kurusapa - the Teachers' Council of Thailand - has set up a 25member panel to take action against 11 teachers at government schools who were found to have secured their jobs using diplomas they "bought" from ESarn University without attending any lectures.

The panel, which has 15 days to perform its work, will also examine statements by a number of schools that may have falsely claimed that ESarn University graduates completed apprentice courses with them. The schools will also face legal action if found guilty.

Kurusapa secretarygeneral Ongkorn Amornsirinant dismissed rumours that certain Kurusapa executives were attempting to disrupt the investigation process because they had received kickbacks from ESarn University to unlawfully grant it permission to open extra campuses to admit students.

Nevertheless, the panel chairman, Bundit Sriphutthangkoon, said the panel would look into the rumours and report back to Ongkorn within the 15 days.
