Hello,

I just posted my second sticky note here at home: กระจกเงา (noun) 'mirror'.

A big part of this exercise is discover new words and clarify meanings.

On the Thai-Language website, pulling back to the component กระจก (noun) 'mirror; plate glass', I see the examples มองดูกระจก and ส่องกระจก.

มองดูกระจก (phrase) look in the mirror.

ส่องกระจก (verb) to look into the mirror.

There are no sample sentences for มองดูกระจก. There are two sample sentences for ส่องกระจก. The second one is throwing me off a bit.

คุณต้องเปิดใจ และส่องกระจกดูความผิดพลาดในการเดินหมากทางการเมืองของตัวเอง

"You need to be honest and look in the mirror to see any mistakes you have made in your own political life."

If I were to strip off คุณต้องเปิดใจ และ, would the sentence then change to "มองดูกระจกดูความผิดพลาดในการเดินหมากทางการเมืองของตัวเอง" ?

"Look in the mirror to see any mistakes you have made in your own political life."

Is there a difference between กระจกหลัง and กระจกมองหลัง ?

I am trying to think of a 'rearview mirror' example aside from one that you would find in a car.

Can กระจกหลัง or กระจกมองหลัง be used to describe a mirror used to monitor the back of a store from the cash register ?

I have found the Dentist Mouth Mirror to be a handy little tool, especially the ones with the magnet on the bottom.

Your first point refers to looking at yourself in the MIRROR as you correctly deduced.

The second refers to looking at yourself with a MAGNIFYING glass not a mirror.

At least that's the way I read it.

Do you look in the RID at all, I enjoy I very much and you seem to want to know answers too.

If you look up ส่องกระจก all will be explained. It means to look at yourself in a mirror, but has a derived meaning to examine yourself in status or mistakes usually said to demean the subject.

It is suspiciously like the English reflect on your behaviour. I have translated ดูหมิ่น as 'demean'.

ส่องกระจก is one word(verb) for ดูภาพตนเองในกระจกเงา

For the verb มองดูกระจก I would just use it as a verb phrase; Look in the mirror. ในร้านตัดผมลูกค้านั่งมองดูกระจก

Thanks for calling me out on that tgeezer. I took a look at RID and that site does not intimidate me anything like it did before. I looked at Lexitron also. I got to 'ปริยาย', looked that up, what a relief.

How ridiculous was it getting ?

I decided to cross check มองดู with ส่องดู on the Thai-Language website:

มองดู (verb) to look at closely; stare at.

ส่องดู auto populates with นก (verb) to watch birds.

There is no unique entry for ส่องดู but both definitions (มองดู and ส่องดูนก) are broken down into components.

Then I went on to the SEAlang website and ran some searches:

มองดูกระจก comes back with 'Nothing found'

มองดู (verb) to look.

(verb) to look at, regard.

ส่องกระจก (verb) to look into a mirror.

(verb) to look through a lens.

ส่องดู (verb) to look at (through an optical instrument or by means of a mirror).

(verb) to look through (an optical instrument).

(verb) to throw a light on and see.

กระจกส่อง (noun) mirror, looking glass; hand-mirror; reflector

Then I went on to run web searches using different word combinations to find a 'Dentist Hand Mirror' in Thai.

That lead me to a few Dentist websites where i got close (but no cigar).

I actually ended up emailing a couple of these sites (still waiting for a reply).

Gosh you do work at it! I think that the T/E sources are only good for nouns. มองดูกระจก is one word extra as with ดูกระจก I treat them as verb and noun if there is any nuance to found the context will show it, and I am afraid that is what you get from T/E dictionaries.

I fear that ส่องกระจก will take on a non- literal meaning because of T/E dictionaries and be lost. One of your examples showing ส่องดู 'to look through an optical instrument by means of a mirror' is too much information, the RID gives an example of ส่องกล้อง the noun you should be thinking of is กล้อง not กระจก and the verb เพ่ง.

I wonder if a native speaker would ever use ดูในกระจก; hardly anyone looks at a mirror do they? your image appears to be the other side of the glass, 'inside', and though simple, 'look into a mirror' is wonderful English.

Maybe ส่องกระจก is similarly good, because although it needs a definition, the word ส่อง implies an action on the part of the subject. getting face and mirror in correct relative positions for instance. (the first mirrors would be hand held).

ส่องระจก (note WITHOUT ดู) will mean to look at your reflection in the mirror.

ส่อง is also used when describing that you are using a tool to look through such as glasses, binoculars, microscope etc.

The only time ส่อง is written together with ดู as in "ส่องดู" explicitly means to stare.

Normally when you use ส่อง it should not be used together with ดู such as ส่องกล้องขยาย (song klong khayai) [looking through a microscope]

A native speaker would not use ดูในกระจก because it would mean look inside (the) mirror (or glass). But is not quite correct because if you want to mean to look inside the glass for example to see somethng inside a display glass, you'd have to say ดูข้างในกระจก

Thanks it is interesting. I am glad that you are not influenced by the English 'look into a mirror'.

กระจกส่อง would describe a mirror to specifically look for something, such as กระจกส่องหลัง would mean rear mirror in a car.

In other words, it would be used to describe something, and not the act of doing something like ส่องระจก

You can perfectly strip off คุณต้องเปิดใจ and write only มองกระจกดูความผิดพลาดในการเดินหมากทางการเมืองของตัวเอง

It is not neccesary to put ดู because มองกระจก means look at the mirror (at the reflection) but if you write มองดูกระจก it would mean more like examine the mirror itself (and not the reflection)
