Rice Soaring 50% in Thailand as Thaksin Seeks Votes in World’s Top Shipper

Thai rice prices, a benchmark for Asia, may jump 50% by the end of the year under a plan by the party favored to win the July 3 election to buy the grain directly from farmers, according to millers and traders. Yingluck Shinawatra’s Pheu Thai Party plans to reinstate a policy introduced by her brother, fugitive former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, to buy unmilled rice at 15,000 baht ($496) per metric ton, twice the current level. That would raise costs for exporters and boost the price of shipments to about $750 per ton from $500, according to a survey of eight millers and traders.

A jump in prices in Thailand may boost demand for cheaper grain from Vietnam, the second-biggest shipper, and India. “If this measure is taken, world prices will definitely increase as Thailand represents one-third of world trade and cannot be ignored,” said Mamadou Ciss, chief executive officer of Singapore-based broker Hermes Investments Pte.

Pichai Naripthaphan, a candidate for the opposition Pheu Thai Party said, “When Pheu Thai becomes the government, we’ll urgently implement the rice-pledging and farmer-credit policy. This is our key policy to win votes, not only this time but in every election.” In 2008, when Thaksin’s allies were last in power and the government had a similar policy, it bought 5.4 million tons of rice from about 700,000 farmers. Local prices rose to a record 17,000 baht per ton in April that year. Under Thaksin’s plan, purchases were designed as collateral for loans to be redeemed when market prices advanced. Instead, rice ended up sitting in warehouses, boosting stockpiles to a record 6.1 million tons in 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Yingluck hasn’t said how much rice her government may buy if Pheu Thai wins.

“The increase in Thai prices will make Vietnam and all competitors very happy,” Concepcion Calpe, senior economist at the FAO, said by phone from Rome.

K. Olarn has said

""City dwellers may ask if the rice price would then climb up? From data, we produce 30 million tonnes of paddy rice per year, or 20 million tonnes of polished rice. Thais consume 10 million tonnes and the rest is exported. We will have a mechanism in place to ensure that domestic price is not too expensive while exports are carried out in a thorough way," he said."

With 300B/day, starting at 15,000 for those fresh out of University, What's another Baht more or less? Rich in six months some PTP person said, a tablet PC for kids, free WiFi, credit cards for (almost) all. Why worry?

Eggs.Just watched her interview boy she's great,I reckon she'd do better spitting out the marbles first though.:-)

Somewhat bored I just had a look at the clip, with all those varying comments I though why not. Now I know why k. Thaksin called her a clone. I was reminded of this interview with big brother a week after the 'prolonged rally' was cleared in May 2010. Same talking around subjects, using generalisms, basicly saying nothing, or admitting nothing. Well, as someone remarked, probably not for local consumption anyway <_<

Yingluck Shinawatra is going to take her party to a landslide win.

You know it and I know it.

You who oppose her and her party will go her names. You will say she did this and that.

But it will not matter.

She is going to win huge with her party and crush the illegitmate clown party now in power.

Get used to it.

Beautiful, intelligent and elegant Yingluck Shinawatra, sister of former Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra may well become the first woman Prime Minister of Thailand.

HAAAAA HAAAAAAA

Her brother will be back and the corrupt judges in the Supreme Court will be impeached and will be removed.

A new constitution will be passed and this clown act of over 20 coups will at loing last end.

Funny a woman will take you clowns down.

Nice to see some people are so convinced of their opinion they even write in bold. To put emphasize on the obvious probably.

Well, sorry, but I removed the bold and I also feel obliged to say I do not agree with your writing. Since that's your opinion and this is mine, that shouldn't really bother any of us.

Her brother will be back, he said so himself and he's gone on record as the most trustworthy fellow when giving out statements. The corrupt judges who jailed his lawyers six months on walking around in court with a money filled lunchbox, these judges must be trembling in their boots.

The clown's part must be that of k. Natthawut with k. Jatuporn momentarily unavailable. Mind you, k. Natthawut really tries, he's warned, accused and threatened about all he doesn't like and who he sees standing in his way. Democracy for all and a bit more for me ;)

BTW most people would agree on elegant, with billions in the bank that seems easy. The 'beautiful' is in the eye of the beholder, no comment. The 'intelligent' part is open for discussion. Not stupid for sure, not exceptional either, bit pampered, helps to bolster the ego. Big brother whispering in your ear, calling you clone also seems to help ;)

"Certainly, behind the policy to have eggs sold by the kilogram is a lack of understanding. Naturally, eggs are fragile and thus they should not be sold by the kilo," she said, attacking the arch-rival Democrat Party.

Take that Democrats.

:P

wow some diverse projects there

Dams, trains, corporate tax levels, minimum wages, fixed incomes, education funding

then the biggest and most important issue of all, eggs!

she obviously does not buy eggs herself

even if these fragile eggs are bought by the kilo, amazingly they can still be put in egg boxes so they don't get broken

the wonders of modern technology............

Suprising as it may seem to you but most thai people do not buy their eggs in egg boxes from tesco metro, but loose in plastic bags from local shops.

Ofcourse, because they buy their eggs by the weight.

Beginning at 3:14, it's amusing to hear her speak of her family's involvement in politics as a means of making up for her own lack of any political experience. She goes to list "my brother", "my sister", "my brother-in-law"... "so I understand the nature of politics".

The bit she somehow forgot to mention that all three of them are banned for politics for participating in electoral fraud.

A terrific set of role models to educate her into the field of politics. Yeah, she "understands" alright.

When she becomes Prime Minister, will some of you who post endless nonsense about her and her family then get a life?

She will win.

If you keep crying here, it will be funny.

It will be pathetic but kind of funny.

Maybe the big bad, and paid corrupt Generals in the army, will be afraid of a woman.

A coup would mean no more love life for you boys. The Thai ladies will hold out on you should you do your nasty coup stuff to the lady.

I guess you could simply do your circle dance with your boys.

Welcome to another new (perhaps Thai ?) poster, with clear opinions :

- there will be a (unpredicted by any polls) landslide for PTP. We know it. Ms Yingluck will "win huge with her party".

- Her brother will be back

- there will then be direct interference with the Supreme Court, while there remain underway several cases against him

- there will be yet another new constitution

- we are all clowns, who cry a lot

- no more love life for us, after a coup, although equally "this clown act of over 20 coups will at loing last end". We might "do your nasty coup stuff to the lady".

- We like to do circle dancing with boys (actually, in my own case, this used to be true, although I was always happy to circle-dance with girls too, we ageing folk-rockers are like that  )

- HAAAA HAAAA

Thank-you for your valuable contribution to our understanding, of how Ms Yingluck plans to boost confidence, if elected. :whistling:

the political naivity by the minority of vocal posters on this forum is breathtaking.

please dont tell me you think the audience for that interview is the elecotrate ?

I would recommend that you take another look at the abc-interview, Ms Yingluck does not come across very clearly, if this was intended to impress English-speaking foreigners then it was IMO somewhat-lacking. Very reminiscent of her clone, indeed.

No doubt she is more coherent when speaking in Thai, I hope the voters do get the chance to see her in-action against other politicians, before they have the chance to vote. But perhaps I'm just being "rather naive", in wishing for this, or thinking it helpful to the democracy towards which she so-passionately wishes to lead her country ? B)

The pro Thaksin posts have seemed to have progressed from the early, Elected by majority of Thais, to he was politically removed from office, he was illegally removed, he was convicted by political influenced courts, he was/is Thailand's hope, he is not involved in politics, bring me back and I can cure all wrongs, etc.

When the pro Thaksin people are shown the error of their ways/thinking by other TV members, they bring in a new group to go off on another tangent. The use by date for Thai politicians seems variable, Its just a shame that most of the banned/ex politicians can not recognize that they have aged/soured, thus they should all join together and play checkers under the shade trees.

Just to boost confidence further Pheu Thai Party leader Yongyuth Wichaidit insisted on Friday that Ms. Yingluck is the only candidate for prime minister if his party wins the election. He also said not to be ready to take the post in place of Yingluck and stressed he would definitely not accept it.
