One aspect of Re - Fueling your Vehicle that Ive noticed in Thailand , one never sees that Man,The one that takes Weights and Measures from the pumps, while the Proprietor looks petrified. Do they ever do spot checks here?..I Am sure at sometime we have all thought "That doesn't seem right" but left it a that..

Seen them

In +8 years and +450k km I have been asked twice to pay for more than my tank holds, but that would probably be due to pump not starting at zero.

Since then I always look at pump/meter to check it starts at zero, and price is same as on big post.

As milage doesnt change, I assume each pump is calibrated correctly

Two things I have learnt about living in LOS, not allowed to put fuel in your own car or carry your own golf clubs. Like it!

NB: Thai TV did have news report a few weeks back on new PTT self service garages in Bangkok. Interviewing motorists - mainly female hi so's, not impressed!.

Yes, there is a weights and measures dept. and they do perform checks. There was big media coverage of underfilling going back 5 or 6 years ago.

However, the most common rort is staff filling up their motorcycles or topping up their pickups, then not putting the nozzle back, so you're starting at 100-200 Baht rather than zero.

Always check it's zero'd out before starting - I've now caught them out a few times on this..

Also have a sense of just how much your car takes when you need to fill it I.E. I really only fill mine to about half and always do it when it's at a quarter or slightly under so I know it nearly always takes 12.50l or there bouts for around 600b.. Be habitual with it and even if you don't get to see the meter before filling you can still have a sense once filled..

While that won't keep you getting screwed necessarily, you can make a complaint and if no satisfaction then simply avoid the station in question and maybe report it later to the authorities if you feel up to it..

Also fill at different stations occasionally if you use the same one regularly, mix it up, and see if there is any radical difference, all things being equal in price of course..

I always fill it full, reset one tripmeter, and know rather exactly how many liters needed at next pump. Check pump starts at zero, and not much can go wrong. As I dont use car much locally, mostly out of province trips, I fill up at random stations
