Thais have better health now

By The Nation

Longevity among Thai people is greater but the number of teenage mother has tripled, a Bangkok seminar on Thai people's life quality and health was told yesterday.

Citing information on body examination collected by the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI), Assoc Prof Chuenruethai Kanjanajittra said Thai people tended to have acquired good health through better public heath services, improved mental and physical health and financial stability to afford good foods and post-retirement healthcare.

Personal health setbacks were also reported, like people at 15 or older became overweight and fat (34.7 and 32.1 per cent respectively), and the number of mothers under 20 years of age had increased from 5.6 per cent in 1958 to 15.5 per cent in 2008, especially among mothers aged 10-14 years.

The number of successful suicides has decreased from 8.6 to 5.7 per 100,000 citizens in the past decade, while econonic gap between the rich and the poor had not changed much, in the past 20 years. Rich people generate incomes around 54-59 per cent of GDP while the poor's total income was no more than 5 per cent.

"The richest people have incomes 11.3 times of those poorest," she added.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. There's no such thing in the lower northeast, public health or heath service? I'm irritated now.................

A heath is an area of open land covered with rough grass or heather and with very few trees or bushes, so what does this article mean?

Right, in the homeland of Thaksin voters it's still a fact, due to the politics of the Master of promises.

In my rural province at the Burmese border with 300 000 refugies and 500 00 people without complete civil rights we have the highest density of Health Stations, with good educated staff (most MA for public health, midwife education included. Why?

Before Thaksin Chuan Leek Pai with local engaged Dem MPs, the Foundation of HRP Sirindhorn and her Sister in taking over the legacy of her Grandmother developed a system of health system, not perfect but working.

Under the Thaksin reign, this system was bleeded to death, no funds for the Health Stations and Hospitals, sick people came, paied 30 Baht, but no medicaments, no good doctors (they changed to private hospitals).

Now we have for the 3 Health Stations in our Tambon one good doctor, one midwife, one MA for malaria, rabies and other infections. No need to go 50 km to the still underdeveloped Hospital.

The health services for the refugee population is underwritten in large part by the USA and European governments with important contributions from the William Clinton and the Bill & Melinda Gates foundations. Most of the malaria prevention activity for Thais and refugees alike in the Northeast comes courtesy of foreign organizations. The importance of of these foreign supported public health initiatives makes a big difference for Thailand, although one would not know about that if one reads the local press.
