Thaksin: Pheu Thai to Form Govt with Small Parties

Ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has expressed confidence that the Pheu Thai Party will win the upcoming election and be able to form a coalition government with smaller parties.

Kyodo news agency quoted ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as saying in an interview that his younger sister Yingluck, who is the Number One party-list candidate of the Pheu Thai Party, will win the July 3 election in a landslide.

According to the report, Thaksin said Pheu Thai will invite smaller parties to form a coalition government and start the reconciliation process which will also include discussions with those involved in politics, such as military leaders.

He did not name the small political parties, but said Pheu Thai will consider those that win only one House seat or two.

He was quoted as saying that a single-party government has proved to be an unsuccessful format for Thailand, referring to his own experience during his premiership.

Thaksin expressed hope that he can return to Thailand in November to attend the celebration of His Majesty the King's 84th birthday anniversary on December 5 and the wedding ceremony of his daughter later the same month.

He thinks they will win a landslide but that they will form a coalition government because single party government has proved unsuccessful?

Really? Well for one, if they do win a landslide, they will have all the power they need and any party that wants to join them will do so from a very weak footing so they would have to be very desperate. For two, if they win a landslide and other parties join them, that will leave the country with a tiny opposition. Would that be healthy? Not that i suppose he cares... just wondering.

Anyway, not that it really matters. PTP have to win the landslide first, and none of the indicators suggest any party capable of that. We'll see.

Rix ---- when they mean "small parties" they mean TINY parties -- those with 1 or 2 seats .... in other words they don't have to be listened to at all. The concept being that in some way Thaksin's autocratic CEO style will be more "democratic" it they have 3 MP's from other parties helping them in a coalition :)

This comment by Thaksin is obviously targeting those voters on the fence between a smaller party and PT.

I think he would also like to 'clean up' the political landscape by slow attrition of the smaller mercenary parties

Didn't he do that when he bought a few smaller parties into TRT before the 2005 election?

Did he?

At least the army didn't put some pressure on the smaller parties to sell themselves, right?

So ... Chuwit may be able to get into the government (he will certainly get an MP seat.

The others in the government will only be those that have sworn allegiance to Thaksin ---(assuming he gets a chance for his sis/surrogate daughter to form a government-- still far from certain!)

What he did do is rule out any of the large alternatives to the Dems or PTP --- That is good news for the opposition.

I do not recall Thailand ever having an elected entire single party government. I also read, he said that the single part government had proved unsuccessful during his tenure (2005). Not sure that the reporting is correct or he is mumbling again.

No the Army didnt because the other smaller parties were already bought and paid for with millions of baht to ensure victory'. Many people seem to forget that some of the parties and MP'S that are now part of the current coalition used to be Thai Rak Thai (Pui Thai)

Many of the factions of TRT were their own parties before being bought into the TRT fold before the 2005 election.

In the 2007 election, they were still part of PPP (TRT mark II), but when PPP were disbanded, they went their separate ways again.

@Slapout ... TRT needed a coalition in 2001, but they merged with the coalition parties for the 2005 election, giving TRT a majority.

You obviously don't read the news. They didn't go their separate ways...they were forced to join the Democrat coalition.

Let's hope that Thaksin can actually return to Thailand, the vicious political persecution can stop & those who have been duped by the propaganda will have a chance to understand that it is the government/ army/ elite that are the ones ruining the country.

It's a good thing I don't believe everything I read. Propaganda is all PTP knows. when there is this much money and saving face at stake the only real measure of success is Propaganda. Pure and simple. What makes propaganda work is idiots believing it. Know one knows not even Thaskin or Democrats what's in store for the future of Thailand. Speculation with the false might of proclamation at best

As long as there are people to make their own gains it will never stop - people are too shallow and full of their own views to wory about the common good - bit like you really!!;)

I think his name is Thaksin Shinawatra or something like that - after all isnt that exactly what HE would do if he were PM and an ex criminal PM was trying to return and take control of the country - interesting point - what would Thaksin do to Thaksin? What would PM Thaksin have done to the red shirts if hed been PM faced with last years terrorism and had the army on his side??

How offensive and patronising and I wonder if you have the courage to make such comments to Thai people directly.

Many would outright agree with the comment .... how many thought vote-buying was not only endemic but a serious problem? I had the discussion with 5 Thai voters tonight, in fact. We were discussing 'hubris' and someone referring to himself as a Mandela or Ghandi ... they brought the conversation around to politics at the village scale. These 5 saw Thai politics the same way, and 2 are from the South, 2 from Isaan, and one from the North. Their questions to me was "How can we get rid of the dinosaurs?" So --- yes Many would agree with the statement. BTW --- your righteous indignation has the other poster making statements that he didn't say. (ie "The electorate is entirely bought" ---)

If you understand how regional power groups work in Thailand and you buy their bosses ... you are buying a massive chunk of the electorate. Apparently, some don't stay bought though .. then you get a Newin that dumps Thaksin and joins the opposition and thus forms the government.

grrr cleaning up your quotes is a pain ...
