Post Election Outlook Worries PM

The Democrat leader expresses concern that the rise of the Pheu Thai Party to power after the election will cause a new round of political conflicts.

Speaking during an interview with international news agency Reuters, Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva suggested that electing Pheu Thai is a show of support for the return of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra which will plunge the country into chaos again.

Abhisit added Pheu Thai is focused on helping Thaksin rather than resolving the problems facing the Thai people.

Abhisit then accepted that his party's lag behind Pheu Thai is due to the public's discontent about the rising prices of goods for which his government must take responsibility.

On the surging popularity of prime ministerial contender Yingluck Shinawatra, the premier said it is normal for a new face in politics to receive a good response when being introduced to the public.

However, Abhisit said he believed his party will win roughly 200 MP seats, more than the modest 180 seats predicted by several political observers.

The piece by Reuters elaborated by saying the Democrat Party has not won an election in nearly 20 years and has never been re-elected after governing.

It commented that Abhisit helped the country steer through the global financial crisis in 2008 and push the economy to grow 7.8 percent last year despite political turmoil.

However, the Democrat Party cannot erase its image as the party of elite establishments.

Given recent opinion polls, Reuters predicted that Pheu Thai will win the upcoming election by a landslide as it can secure strongholds in the North and Northeast, the country's two largest voter bases.

It commented that the people in the countryside still see Thaksin as their hero while Pheu Thai is likely to gain more MP seats in Bangkok although it has a close alliance with the red-shirt group, which, last year, staged a clash with the Army leading to the deaths of 91 people.

The news agency also noted Yingluck's entry into politics strengthened Pheu Thai's electioneering given the birth of red-shirt villages as proof.

It said their appearance concerns Abhisit who commented that people who are not supporters of the red-shirt group would feel pressured.

It concluded the July 3 election will be a transition point and a key dilemma for the country that is the second largest economy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Naturally the post election outlook worries Abhisit.

Not only will his political career be in tatters, he will be facing a number of court cases and most probably be Thailands next fugitive.

Because PTP's 'Amnesty for all' is in fact another outright lie, its just an amnesty for their allies, right?

If the electorate vote for PT is it a sign that the people think otherwise and have their reason not to vote for the Democrats.

Time for Abhisit to realise and to accept that.

They should it call 'Justice for all.'

Even for the army, civilians and journalists killed or injured by red shirts?

You don't think the return and amnesty of Thaksin will cause more chaos?

who?

A colonel for starters. A number of other army personnel on April 10. A woman on the BTS platform. Some of the multi-coloured shirts. A journalist on May 19. Just off the top of my head.

We could also look at the hospital invasion, and all the small businesses affected.

Shall I go on?

What chaos? It is a sore loser talking, the one who cannot win an election and accept the will of the people.

A shoddy smear campaign, scaremongering and actually even a threat to unleash the yellow pest again.

 Yep. Abhisit's in control of the yellow shirts. He's going to unleash them again if Thaksin comes back, like he did in 2005 and 2008.

Go on. Bring evidence. Any *justice* happened yet?

All his recent comments seem to smack of defeatism. The ignominy of it all if he is unseated by no more than a politically inexperienced young woman.

Obviously a concern as the job market here is not very good, even for ex pm's.

Whichever side wins hopefully it will be an outright victory as anything less will not be good for Thailand and that's what really counts.

an Abhisit government representative declared on live TV that the Dems would accept the decision of the electorate

the interviewer asked the red mouthpiece if he would declare the same thing

he said ''it depends''...........

I think several parties/groups are using innuendo of the consequences of their loss at the polls rather than publicizing real plans for the betterment of the majority of Thais and how those plans will be effected and financed.

I have to chuckle with the Thai way of many times handling a slight to them or even physical damage by accepting a immediate settlement. Six months later they are complaining that what they received and were told was insufficient to fully solve the initial problem and it has not been resolved. I can foresee this same scenario after the coming election. Many of us are just not sure how adult those who feel left out, taken advantage of, etc, will react to their self inflicted disappointment.

The woman at the BTS was also a multicolour and the only multicolour killed, I believe? Journalist on the 19th, Fabio Polenghi, was likely killed by the military according to evidence so far. I think there were 6 soldiers killed on 10th and 4 more killed by the MiB through the rest (one was friendly fire)? That's just off the top of my head though. Aren't some of the MiB actually in jail already? There were reports the Thai police had captured some of them last year. Might've just been a bunch of patsies though. Certainly the MiB involved on April 10th will be difficult to get hold of, I'd imagine.

Unless they changed their stance, I think the Amnesty didn't include those responsible for the deaths of 90+ protesters.

Guess it must be covering the deaths of over 2000 though if Thaksin gets amnesty.

Give your head a shake a amnesty for Thaksin is what the whole idea is about. what ever possessed you to think they were not going to give one to the man who bankrolled the deaths of 90 people.

Every time I see statements like yours it reinforces my belief that Thailand is in desperate need of a education system that will really teach.

Unfortunately not all politicians feel that way they know a Thai capable of thinking for himself would never vote for them.

That is a statement that includes all parties :(

well what do you think?

its very clear to me and to other Thai observers as reported in the other paper

he was intimating that they would accept the result only as long as they won

if they didn't there would be trouble

What 2000 death you are talking about? Was Thaksin declared guilty of it?

Natthawut answered that it depended on the situation.

Natthawut said he had learned there was an attempt, with military support, to prevent Pheu Thai from forming the next government.
