Indonesian ministry says country needs multi-airport systems

2011-06-17 10:52:36 GMT+7 (ICT)

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Indonesia's Transportation Ministry on Thursday called for the country to develop multi-airport systems to reduce density at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Denny Siahaan, head of the Transportation Ministry's Training and Development Institute, told the Antara news agency that multi-airport systems in Indonesia would reduce density in the main airport, give an alternative to the metropolitan population in traveling, and reduce distance to airports.

In addition, Siahaan underlined the importance of large cities in the country to anticipate future air transport demand, as multi airport systems would also promote regional economic growth and increase competitiveness among airport managers.

Transportation Ministry officials held a meeting with transportation experts, aviation, and airport practitioners as well as private companies, where all parties agreed for the need of multi-airport systems.

However, participants noted that in order for their development, technical issues had to be considered in order to prioritize the airports' operations, as a close coordination network had to be set up between the central government, regional administrations, airport authorities, ATC activities, airline businesses and companies providing land transportation.

Bambang Tjahjono, Airport Director of the Transportation Ministry, underlined that in 2010, there were 12 airports managed by PT Angkasa Pura I with a total capacity of 30,700,440 people and a movement of 49,237,437 passengers. Meanwhile, PT Angkasa Pura II's 13 airports managed 62,215,834 passengers although their capacities are estimated to manage less than half, 30,815,000 people.

Furthermore, the number of passengers in the 2009-2014 period is expected to grow by 10 percent, while a growth rate of 8 percent is expected during the 2015-2020 period and an additional 5 percent for the 2021-2030 period.
