Samsung Cooper

I recently bought a Samsung Cooper and when travelling around the world I want to hook up to the internet in Wifi zones. Very often I get signals from open networks(at least that`s what the phone says) and I connect to it but I still can`t access the internet.

Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong, settings that need to be changed? On my phone the data roaming is off.

I have recently bought my wife a Samsung Cooper and were having the same problems. Managed to get wi-fi and internet set up. Go to a telephone shop that specialises in Samsung mobiles and they will set it up for you or visit their web site

Can you give an example of a network? Can you connect to a known good home WiFi network?

Very often I can connect to a WiFi network but then I need to open a browser, try a page, get re-directed to a log-in page.

I've used a Cooper on occasion, and had no problems accessing WiFi networks. I support several Cooper users and would hear about WiFi problems.

Mine connects fine to my wifi and any open wifis.

Lomatopo, If you are out of your house and you get sent to a log in page, then that wifi is not free (not being patronizing).

I use it well with Starbucks and that god awful Black Canyon. Works well.

Many/most commercial open, free WiFi networks re-direct you to a "terms/conditions" page. Some ask for details, although you can fudge these; United Airlines Red Carpet Club and All Nippon Airways lounges in Narita work this way (my most recent experiences). No charge, but you must step through a verification page.

I guess I was trying to determine if the OP knew if the "open" networks were truly free. And also figure out if the OP's WiFi is even working properly (turned on, configured properly).

Yes, it's set up properly. I'm able to access my own home network and some open networks as well. Actually, I was in the United lounge in Narita airport yesterday when I posted this new thread! I did it because yet again I was unable to connect to a network my phone told me was open.

Not sure what to say.

Can you look at Settings, About phone and tell us the Firmware version and Baseband version.

Do you have any other issues with the modem: voice calls OK, quality good; 2G/3G works; GPS locks/accurate?

Also look in Settings, Wi-Fi settings, <settings/menu again>, Advanced and make sure all picks are default.

The NRT RCC WiFi network has/had a T&C page; I've successfully accessed that network with my Samsung Captivate. Maybe this is Flash-related? Browser related? Have you ever been able to say get to a True WiFi log-in screen?

Did you buy this in Thailand?

The Firmware version I can't find in settings. I see Android (2.2.1), baseband (S5830DXKA9), and kernel version (2.6.32.9-perf root@SE-S604#1) and build number (FROYO.DXKA9)

Voice calls are OK. I don't know if 3G works. I thought there still was no 3G in most parts of Thailand(?). I live in Pattaya. The positioning is accurate when I open Maps (BTW, where can I see the actual coordinates in degrees North and East?)

I am not able to locate the advanced menu that you refer to to check for default settings.

The NRT etc. I have no clue about :)

I bought the phone in Thailand. Thanks for helping!

Can you describe the procedure you use, in as much detail as possible, when encountering an open network?

You enable WiFi, scan, select an open network, connect, then what? Do you connect successfully? Then click on Internet, this opens a browser, you enter a URL or choose a bookmark, then what happens?

How many networks have you been unable to access?

I don't know what browser you are using.. BUT i found on Opera it will not connect to the redirect page.. but the stock google did.. maybe that's the problem.

OK, that's worth a look. I use Opera Mini.

Yes, I select the open network and the phone tells me I'm connected. But when I try to use internet, either by going directly to my gmail account or by going via the Opera Mini interface I get a message saying unable to connect/connection error or something along those lines.

OK, sounds like pilot error. Maybe take a look at the user's guide, and use the default (Google) browser? I bet that works.

Its funny, that's the only problem i've had with this phone (some wifi connections do not access internet successfully). I ignore it because I always just used the CAT mifi, which requires no dns settings and just works.

My home wifi I cannot access internet either. I was able to connect one time, but the rest of the times, it shows no connection available on the stock browser. I think it has something to do with the dns settings, but it looks different from my mac or windows dns configuration settings; i never bothered to research it further. Maybe I will here in a few minutes.

edit: ok I did check it just now with home wifi and everything works. I went to the advanced menu and saw that the dns 1 and dns 2 are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 . I also had 'use static ip' checked.

btw, also make sure the wifi is set to never sleep. if it wakes up from sleep, it sometimes works slower or not at all. Of course you will have to remember to switch off wifi when you are finished, which is easily done through the notifications tab. Although idle wifi doesn't burn too much power, it's enough to notice a drop in your standby time.

Another "bug" is that every now and then when I switch off wifi, the edge/gprs does not come back up automatically. I must go to wireless settings and "automatically select network" again and then it magically comes up. I'm not sure of the true cause of that.
