Forget the rumors you've heard about Pattaya. People love to exaggerate. It's generally pretty safe unless you go looking for trouble. Pattaya is the ideal base for your budget. Cheap accommodations, cheap food, central with 2 airports and a bus station nearby. 100 baht massage, 70 baht gym, 30 baht ferry to Koh Larn with nice beaches and clean water, 10 baht buses. So, plenty of cheap activities during the day. Tons of nightlife with no cover clubs and plenty of cheap bars if you look around.

100k is rough, you'd have to be extremely disciplined to stay within this budget, 150k is more realistic.

Chiang Mai/ Chiang Rai area is nice and should be a definite visit, but not a good base. It's far from everything, so your travel costs/time will offset any savings (which would be insignificant anyway).

Good luck and enjoy your travels

Thanks for the input. As i said earlier the budget is not written in stone, i can go with 150k if that works better. It seems really hard to get an answer around here...

A friend of mine stayed in Koh Samui for a couple of months, even though he spent a shitload on girls and in the bar he said you really dont need more than 500GBP a month. He stayed in a pretty nice 200GBP a month appartment which included electricity and water costs. And this is Koh Samui after all.....

As for the food some say you can get a huge meal with rice and chicken for 50 baht, another says a bowl of soup for 200. <deleted>? Is it truffle soup?

Don't listen too much to some posters here, I think they live in another dimension or prepare some kind of comedy show.

If you like the sea, well... Pattaya has a beach but isn't a seaside resort town.

There are daily ferries to Koh Larn for 30 baht one way.

But if you want to stay at a place that's a bit away from the "action" of Pattaya, try Koh Chang. There are guesthouses there for about 500 baht a day.

When in Thailand, I don't need more than one meal a day.

A typical meal at a Thai place will cost you about 120 baht (includes 2 or 3 dishes with rice and soup and water). At a place catering to foreigners, your meal will cost between 200 and 300 baht but will taste better.

Add in some prepaid sim, maybe a motorbike and petrol and some other stuff, and you get to about 1000 baht a day.

Add 500 to 1000 baht for nightly entertainment, depending on time...

enjoy!

:-)

You will not get the answer you are looking for here. other than it cost this much for me, everyone is different, so there cost of staying in thailand will vary. Decide where you want to stay and go there and see what happens.

Since you friend stayed so cheap at the beach well there is your answer.

I have considered Pattaya but even though its cheaper people have told me its not much different if not worse than the latter with gang members and thugs roaming the streets.

ha ha ha

who are the nitwits who told you that?

Well cant say that someone specifically said that but its hearsay. Havent there been plenty of bar fights in pattaya with tourists getting beat up by 10 guys and whatnot. Its nothing i worry about since i always stay out of trouble, but the last thing i need is some hotshot just really pushing it.

Ill check something out near pattaya and bring more money

You will not find trouble in Pattaya unless you are looking for it. I guess that goes for life in general. Don't wear gold chains etc. Please don't hire a jet ski.

Its a great party town and you can have a really fun time there. I,ve never had any problem in the 16 years I,ve been going. At the first sign of any situation that could turn pear shaped, just walk away.

The pollution at the beaches is an issue though. Ko Samet has better beaches and is not far away, as has Ko Chang and its surrounding islands.

To see some real Thailand, have a couple of weeks tripping around Isaan. Not many tourists and easily accessible, bring a phrase book as English isn't spoken as widely as in a tourist spot.

Where ever you get to, have a good time.

Cheers

Lol i noticed someone said he spent 100k a month? What the hell were you doing man?

Thats my budged also for one month but my thai friend (girl but no gf) included in that.

Apartment rent one month: 9000,-

Water and Electric: 1200,-

Motorbike rent one month 2500,-

And around 15k alone and If i would have to pay barfines and pay those 500St /1000LTs this money wouldnt be close enough,

I´`m better off sending 2-3k for her famaly from time to time. Nothing is for free in thailand ;)
