I have an old computer which should be perfectly OK to use for the basics. Had it completely overhauled and no problems to use for the internet, and anything else that doesn't use too much space.

However lately been having problems with it starting up. Taken to fix 3 times and each time they say dirty RAM, or this time loose RAM.

Each time I get it home it never works but OK in the shop. Is something getting shaken out of place on the trip home?

Anyway going to open up myself and clean RAM, maybe change also.

The repairman said the slot on the motherboard was loose, but surely that means the RAM is just not a good fit (it has been changed before from the original).

Question is can I just do this quickly without any equipment or do I need an anti static bracelet or something fancy; rubber mat, whatever.

Also what's the best way to clean RAM. Read a previous thread which said eraser (is that clean?)

You don't need any fancy anti static equipment. Static can be a problem so a little caution is needed.

Is your computer case earthed? I have an earth wire running from one of the chassis screws at the back of the case down to an earthing rod so just by touching the case I discharge any possible body static.

Try touching something earthed before handling the insides of the computer.

As for cleaning I always spray the memory slot and the contacts with contact cleaner (Blue spray can)

While you are at it check ALL the seatings and connections in the box as anything could have come loose on the way home.

use a (rubber) eraser to clean the RAM

I use standard printer paper. Fold it and squeeze it so it is on both sides of the RAM connector then slide it up and down the connector. Easy to see the results of the cleaning by looking at the paper and safer than an eraser which could remove the gold plating which is only a few microns thick. If you really must use an eraser, be sure it is NOT an ink eraser as that pretty much guarantees plating removal. ;)

As for the static, if you are bare foot, the ground leakage of the floor will pretty much keep you static free. PS, make sure you have the power cord disconnected when entering the box.
