I have had 10 days now with diarrhoea every morning and very frequent visits to the toilet rest of the day. No vomiting but nausea.

Yesterday I throw in the towel and went to one of the hospitals here. Had a stool test which was negative and got a bag with medications which scare me nearly more than the diarrhoea?

This is not my first time with diarrhoea here, but the description regarding how to take the antibiotics is new for me.

The doctor says I shall take four Phardazole 500mg (Tinidazole) for five days and all at bedtime!

Isn’t that a prescription for a medical hangover the day after or…...

I also have got Colofac Retard 200mg which says to be antispasmodic!

Then Librax (D) which says to be for abdominal pain and the last one is Ganaton 50mg which is for improvement of intestinal movement.

Thanks for any input.

The mind boggles..

Tinidazol treats amoebic or giardia infections. Colofac to stop cramping, Librax to stop cramping and is a bit sedative as well, Ganaton supposed to do about the same with an anti-nausea effect as well..

My modest opinion is that it is safer to have the diarrhoea...

Colofac is usually used to treat chronic IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and never for diarrhoea.. Librax more or less the same; also never for diarrhoea; Ganaton usually for bloating and upper GI pains associated with ulcers..

Perhaps just try some papaya, a live yoghurt preparation that contains lactobacillus and a probiotic. Some charcoal tabs are sworn by by many of TV members that share the same affliction at times..

Thanks for the replies.

That was my thoughts to but then again it wasn’t there (diarrhea) 10 + days ago so something must have gone wrong down there. I think maybe the eventually infection came when I one day some near two weeks ago had to call it a day and go to bed in the afternoon and feeling cold (freezing when shower) and had a bit fever. I took two paracet and the day after I was ok, but not the stomach.

Just a few days before that I had visited a restaurant which I usually not use but both my favorite places was closed and at this place I ate something called gai pla whatever thing wrapped in banana leaves and yes the stomach was upset the rest of that day.

I tried Norfloxacin for 3 days but this time it doesn’t fix it. What I not understand is that the diarrhea is worst in the morning, but later on the day and now in the evening the stools are nearly normal. :(

I agree with FBN's advice. eat some natural fresh yogurt or take a probiotic, charcoal tablets if you like to reduce the movements, stay hydrated and wait it out.

If you can't resist the urge to take some of what was given you, make it only the tinidazole and definitely trash all the other pills. The tinidazole will help IF what you have is giardia. May have some nausea while taking it, though, and definetly can't cdrink while on it.

I have take the antibiotic tablets for two days now but only half dosage (Still made me sleep past the alarm yesterday)

Toilet session in the morning nearly same, but felt better on day/evening. Increasing to 3x500mg tonight and will do the full course (5 days)

Rest of the medication already dumped.

Read about giardia online and think I have to scrutinize the pool I use before I blame the food!

On the outside chance your eating habits have not returned to normal, i.e. that you might not be getting adequate amounts of nutrients, I would also add electrolytes to that short list. (Good luck finding one that is not sickeningly sweet with sugar.) Diarrhea can leach essential minerals and salts from the body, and can become life threatening.

The easiest thing to try and one that has near always worked for me and many I have told about it, is stop eating for at least 2 days, 3 better and only drink boiled water and a few packs of "electrolytes". Only do this though, if you are still up and about - still have some energy - otherwise try a different doctor. The reason this mostly works, is that by continuing to eat, you're feeding the bug too. Starve it instead. When you do start eating again, eat soft food at first. No dairy products for a while either.Very hard to treat diarrhea anyway, as there are so many things that can cause it. Good luck.

Unless a doctor prescribes 3 or 4 different medicines then Thai folk will assume that he/she is not a good doctor. I insist that the doctor prescribes only to treat the cause of my illness or discomfort. Cure the cause , the symptoms go away. What is the point of relieving symptoms? How can you know that you are sickening without your body having the ability to signal the fact to you?

I ate a very dodgy meat pie when based in Malta and ended up with a nasty case of 'Malta Dog'. All night long I was either 'sitting on the throne' or had my head stuck down the pan honking away. I prayed for death. Carted off to hospital I was allowed nothing but distilled water for two days - and plenty of it. I was told that this was to flush out all the 'nasties' and to prevent dehydration which could lead to appendicitis. (No, I don't understand this last either).
