Students' shooting blamed on school rivalry

By The Nation

Two Pathumwan Institute of Technology (PTWIT) students - a boy and a girl - were shot and wounded yesterday near their home in Bangkok's Bang Kapi district by two men on a motorcycle, an incident police theorised was based on school rivalry.

Sattawat Wongphrome is safe but girlfriend Wilai Nathakaranont is in a critical condition after they were struck by three bullets. Sattawat was shot four years ago by students of a rival institute, but recovered, his brother told police. Police believe the gunmen waited for Sattawat near his home.

Lat Phrao police are investigating the recent killing of a PTWIT student in Nonthaburi, which they said might be linked to this case.

According to Nonthaburi police intelligence, both victims were close to friends of the unnamed PTWIT student killed in the Nonthaburi attack.

Inter-school tradition is said to require students of an unnamed school, said to be a rival to PTWIT, to shoot or attack one or two PTWIT students on a daily basis, said the sources.

We had great rivalry with another high school in my home town - settled twice a year with winter/summer sports competitions.

In between there was some name-calling, but I never experienced any violence, and sure I'd remember if there had been shootings!

They should make a movie about thai youngsters in highschool and conflicts inside the school and outside the school....

Should be a very interesting movie and can be a blockbuster!!

Is that why they filled in the swimming pool and built the firing range?

Patumwan Institute of Technology. They have a history of violence and should have been shut down years ago.

Kids from other schools come into my central Bangkok school every day to wait for siblings. They are in school uniform and no one blinks an eye. I expect any Thai primary or secondary school would be the same.

These kids that were shot are not school kids.

These kind of tech school rivalries including shootings, beatings and knifings have been going on as long as I've been in Thailand. didn't understand it then, don't understand it now....

Plus, many ex students of these technical schools will tell you that some of this is driven by their teachers.
