UN deplores murder of third journalist in Mexico in one month

2011-07-19 22:48:50 GMT+7 (ICT)

UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) -- The United Nations (UN) on Tuesday condemned the killing of a Mexican journalist, which marks the third in the past month.

Angel Castillo Corona, was beaten to death on July 4 by unidentified assailants on a Mexico State highway from Ocuilan to Tiaguistenco in an attack in which his 16-year-old son was also killed. Castillo Corona wrote about local politics for the regional newspapers Puntual and Diario de México in Ocuilan.

According to the non-governmental watchdog Reporters without Borders, Castillo's son was killed in the attack when his father's attackers ran him over with their car.

Irina Bokova, the Director General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), condemned the murder of Castillo, and said the incident was the latest addition to what she described as "the long list of victims sacrificed at the altar of freedom of expression."

"Sadly, the name of Mr. Castillo is but the newest addition to Mexico’s alarmingly long list of victims," Bokova stated. "I call on the authorities to spare no effort in pursuing criminals who use violence to curb the media."
