The same idots who buy the Rhino Horn also buy the sharkfins....... tw*ts

The advent of viagra, which has the dual advantages of actually working as well as being cheap, has driven down the value of a tiger carcass. I never read if it has done the same with rhino horns, and given the Yemenese appetite for rhino horn daggers, I don't know if it has. But as rhino horns, when used as a aphrodisiac, have nothing other than a placebo effect, viagra is really a much better option. Rhino horns are just keratin, so you can do as well chewing on your fingernails.

I have often thought that the WWF should have a statue of a single viagra tablet at its Zurich headquarters as perhaps the most effective advance in the 20th Century to fight poaching.

Interesting points & thoughts. One has to wonder how there is much market at all for some of these products given the radically cheaper alternative of popping a Viagra pill. Hard to believe there are so many old school folks out there to keep the price up this much.

Edit: I just did a quick internet search and it appears the big thing with Rhino horns now is that people believe it fights cancer ...

Let's scratch the surface a bit:

"The revelation came from a South African manager for Thai Airways, John Oliviers, who worked with Chumlong but then turned whistle-blower and informed the police, the papers said."

So the middle man was a manager for Thai Airways, this seems like an interesting story. What was his role? A coincidence that he worked for Thai Airways or did he use his position and contacts to assure safe passage? Why did he turn whistle blower?

The thought that a bar girl can pose as a big game hunter is simply beyond belief.I'd love to know if ANY of them were stopped coming into Thailand and how they managed to persuade customs that they were returning from a $10,000++ holiday!

Then again, maybe they could claim that they work as maids for the Shinawatras; living off an honest mistake. :whistling:

Seriously, this story is totally dodgy and poses more questions than it answers. But sadly with 1 guy arrested it's probably case closed (back to business!).

Again Thailand makes headlines im so impressed :D

- A Thai man hired prostitutes to smuggle poached rhino horns disguised as legal hunting trophies from South Africa to supply the Asian black market, media said Friday.

Thailand, the hub of smuggling prostitutes? :jap:

After seeing the "shows" in Thailand and in the Phillippines since the early 70's, my corrupt mind was thinking the same. I guess i can blame the Air Force for assigning me to such "lively" locations, lol  Not much change in 40 years.

Some of the people who practice "home made medicine" actually believe the bone, when ground into a powder, which by the way, smells like hell, has healing powers....Go figure...Same with the shark fins...sad...

They actually put rhinos to sleep for cutting the horns off.

Very successful program in national parks.

Yes i agree that putting them to sleep is the best and only way to cut the horn off.

Rhinos really don't like to be disturbed and using a snare to trap them is the worst.

Years ago i was working in Zimbabwe and the government guys used to dart them, then cut off their horns to try and stop the poachers. Not long after they had finished cutting the horns, we came across a dead rhino in Chizirira. They, the poachers had cut the last one centimeter of the horn and left the rest of the carcase. Not pretty to see at all.

Unless those same posters are applauding or supporting those fugitives and child molesters, then there is no hypocrisy involved.

Maybe I missed some posts but I didn't see anybody making fund of Africans and Thais. I see people having a sense of humor about people participating in this subject.

Are you suggesting all Africans and Thais are either poachers, prostitutes, smugglers or use rhino hons for medical purposes? This would be the only way I can see you believing people are making fun of Thais or Africans. I'm just not understanding what nationality, beyond obvious circumstances, has to do with this story or stereotyping fugitives or child molesters. These are individuals not representatives of any group.

When I read the headline it brought a smile to my face, wundering where they they were hiding them, may be it was my (dirty)mind.:whistling:

I know its all very funny.

But its a huge tragedy to have so many wildlife killed.

Its a sad thing what humans will do for a buck.

I was in SA around 3 months ago with a Thai friend, we popped into the local Game Reserve to do a short safari. When I got home in the evening I mentioned to my folks that we didn't see any rhino. They told me that the 'Chinese' have poached them, and the local game reserve didn't have money to buy another rhino, or the resources to protect them.

See, our community never wanted to kill the rhino, so the security was pretty lax.

The fact that it was a Thai, and not Chinese will mean very little to the average South African, who views most Asians as being very cruel and heartless when it comes to animal rights.

I'm sorry but poaching rhino horn is totally unacceptable. What chef would ever do such a thing. I would suggest braising.Throw in a shark fin and a little burgundy for a nice stock, Voila. If you have an extra midget or two it will add a small amount of flavor.

Thai man pleads guilty to South African rhino smuggling

A Thai man pleaded guilty on Monday to smuggling rhino horn from South Africa, in a case in which prostitutes posing as big game hunters were used to conceal an international trafficking ring. Chumlong Lemtongthai is likely to be jailed for more than 10 years under a plea deal that investigators said sealed one of the most important prosecutions in their fight to protect rhinos, whose horns are worth more than gold in parts of Southeast Asia.

Taking advantage of the fact that it is legal for foreigners to hunt rhinos in South Africa and ship horns overseas as trophies, Chumlong hired Thai prostitutes to stage fake hunts. The women were given about $800 dollars each to go to game farms, take a few shots with small caliber rifles and then pose next to rhinos killed by someone else, according to affidavits presented to the court.

Prosecutors said Chumlong was a major player in a network that included private game reserve owners and a suspected animal parts kingpin in Laos who has built a booming business in rhino horn which sells for $65,000 a kilogram in Asia as medicine.

prostitutes posing as big game hunters

Now this I really would like to see. How the hell does a prostitute pose as a big game hunter?

We can look forward to the calendar being published!

I wonder if they'll be as good as the old "Shrimp" calendars....hmmmmm....
