Yingluck, Yongyuth get power to select political leaders

Pheu Thai Party's prime minister-to-be Yingluck Shinawatra and party leader Yongyuth Wichaidit will have the final say in selecting the party's political appointees.

Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit said yesterday that the Pheu Thai executive board resolved to empower Yingluck and Yongyuth to choose persons for the posts of House speaker, deputy speakers, chairpersons of House committees, prime minister, Cabinet members, ministerial advisers and secretaries, and other political positions.

Pheu Thai had insisted that fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who had earlier described his sister Yingluck as "my clone", had no influence in selecting people for a new Cabinet.

Meanwhile, Thaksin's red shirt supporters celebrated his 62nd birthday yesterday in many provinces.

Yingluck, who was picked by Thaksin to become Pheu Thai's prime ministerial candidate, yesterday told reporters that she wished him good health and happiness.

At Kaewfah Temple in Nonthaburi, hundreds of red shirts gathered for a religious ceremony performed by Buddhist monks aimed at warding off any evil against Thaksin. No key figures from the Pheu Thai Party or the red-shirt movement were spotted during the ceremony.

A large birthday cake was given to Thaksin's representative, who later handed the cake to the temple's abbot. The red-shirt supporters also sang the happy birthday song to Thaksin, who is overseas evading imprisonment for abuse of his authority.

The abbot, Phra Khru Palatsan Kittibhatto, who is known to be close to Thaksin, said yesterday that the ex-premier did not require much blessing as his fortune was improving after years of problems.

Thaksin's red-shirt supporters in Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, and Nong Khai also held separate birthday parties for him in the northeastern provinces.

Pheu Thai Gives Yingluck, Yongyuth Authority to Assign Cabinet Posts

The Pheu Thai Party's executive board insists their party leader and PM to-be will have the authority to assign the next ministerial posts.

Sources from the party said that the Pheu Thai Executive board has agreed that party leader, Yongyuth Vichaidit, and PM to-be, Yingluck Shinnawatra would assign the ministerial posts of House speaker, deputy House speakers, chairs of House committees, advisers and secretary to the cabinet, and other political office positions.

Moreover, Yingluck said in an interview that she would discuss the issue with Yongyuth late this week.

It is expected that all assigned lists will be announced by next week.

She stated that all processes have to be delayed until the Election Commission, or EC, endorses the required 95% MPs, the number they need to open the first House meeting.

She revealed that she already has the name of a House speaker in mind.

Former Deputy House Speaker, General Apiwan Wiriyachai, said that the Democratic Alliance Against Democracy, or DAAD, does not expect the Pheu Thai executives board to give them any posts.

He added that the DAAD will respect the party's decision.

Apiwan also said the next defense minister must have a thorough knowledge of military and security affairs.

He said that there are many appropriate candidates, including General Yuttasak Sasiprapa, Air Chief Marshal Sumet Pomanee, General Sampao Choosri, General Chaowalit Yongjaiyuth.

However, he said it would be the Pheu Thai Party board that would make the final decision.

In addition, party executives are calling on all party MPs to keep transparent accounts and assets according to the law.

I have heard Yingluck speak in a few interviews. She is very clear and appears to think very well on her feet although English not her preferred language. Does not look like a indecisive person like Abhisit. Hopefully decisions will now be made.

After only three=and-a-half weeks, she has someone "in mind", now that's what I (don't) call decisive !

She will need to start 'thinking on her feet', but only in the fullness of time, after due consultation & consideration, with proper input from Dubai (Whoops !) and a script placed in front of her.

Whereas it took former-PM Abhisit only a couple of days, to deliver upon his promise to resign as party-leader, if things went poorly at the election. And you call him "indecisive" ?

Get real - if you are the holder of power and lead your party/coalition in an election and are soundly defeated, what choice is there?
