I want to buy some coconut milk. So far Ive been buying something called "nam katii", is this correct...?

I also know there is "nam ma prow" and have also heard another, can anyone tell me the proper way to say coconut milk....?

People usually just call it kathi' (or gathi') with a short i at the end. It is produced by shredding and pressing the liquid out of the pulp/meat of the coconut. That is what you use for cooking curries and making desserts for example.

nam maphrao is the clear or slightly opaque liquid that occurs naturally inside the coconut. As far as I know it is usually something you drink as is but do not use in cooking.

Thanks guys

The one I want would be for hair, would the thicker option be the one that might be better, is this closer to the one back home....?

น้ำมะพร้าว

is coconut water, which is something you drink.

You want to put coconut milk (กะทิ) in your hair? blink.gif

I think maybe, you're looking for a hair product which is possibly something completely different?

Also, it's called just "kati" no need to use "nam" in front.

The first press of the coconut shreds is the "hua kati". It will be more thicker since it'll be more concentrated.

The pressed coconut shreds can be then soaked in water and then pressed additional times, which you'll get the regular kati.

Their usage is different and the thick hua kati is used for dessert while the thin kati is used in cooking.

I have also come across the word กะทิ in books to mean excellent or outstanding.

I assume it is similar to how we use the word 'cream' in English to represent something which is the very best of a group.

Perhaps somebody can give some examples of its use in conversation?
