MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- At least four members of the Mexican Navy died on Tuesday during a highway accident involving a military convoy and a civilian vehicle, officials said.

According to preliminary reports, a small vehicle crashed into one of the units that conformed a military convoy of eight vehicles. The incident occurred on the Mexico-Pachuca highway, as the convoy was traveling from Poza Rica, Veracruz, in the country's eastern region, to Mexico City. However, Navy spokesman Jose Luis Vergara initially said that a trailer had crashed into the convoy.

Eight members of Mexico's Navy were traveling in the impacted unit. Naval officials later confirmed the death of four personnel - three at the scene and one at a hospital while he was receiving medical treatment. In addition, two others were reported injured.

The accident occurred at around 1 p.m. local time near Insurgentes Avenue and Acueducto Guadalupe in Mexico City. The impact caused the military unit to lose control and end up on the opposite lane. Several other vehicles resulted damaged, but no information regarding further injuries was available.

The injured were transported to the General Naval Hospital. Officials also ruled out the possibility of an attack against the Navy convoy.
