Indian police detain five over New Delhi bombing

NEW DELHI (BNO NEWS) -- Five men were detained on Thursday in India-controlled Kashmir in connection with the deadly bomb blast at the New Delhi High Court that happened a day earlier, local media reported.

Investigators traced an email sent by the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) group claiming responsibility for the blast to a cyber cafe in Kishtwar in the conflict-ridden state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Hindustan Times reported. Cyber cafe owner Mehmood Aziz Khawja and four others were picked up for questioning in connection with the email, police said.

The Times of India reported that another email was received by media houses in Mumbai and Delhi purportedly written by another militant outfit, Indian Mujahideen, which also claimed responsibility for the blast. The mail claimed that HuJI had no role in the incident and warned that another blast will take place at a shopping mall.

"We are examining the email received by the media houses..about its authenticity and veracity and (we are) taking it seriously," said Secretary (Internal Security) in the home ministry U K Bansal.

The mail comes a day after a bomb blast outside the High Court in the Indian capital of New Delhi killed at least 12 people and injured over 70. Shortly after the attack, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called on all political parties and all of India's people to unite and fight against this "long war" against terrorism.

The deadly bomb blast was condemned by the United Nations (UN) Security Council and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who reiterated his firm stance that there is no justification for indiscriminate violence against civilians. Leaders of other countries also condemned the attack, including Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani.
