Featured Replies

I’m looking for someone to tutor my 17-year-old son in the 10th grade at EIS in Bangkok. Contact and referrals are appreciated.

Why put pressure on him?

Not everybody is meant for maths and science.

Because my son asked for it, that’s why. Got a lot of time on your hands, huh newbee?

Orangutan I can share with you a bit of our background:

Eighteen months before the end of his junior high school curriculum, our son started to go to a tutorial school (5 hours every Sunday, focused on Maths and Science). Then, in March 2024, he took 2 entrance exams: Triam Udom Suksa School and Satit Prasarnmit Demonstration School. He got both and chose to join Triam Udom Suksa School Science & Maths. He's now in year 2 @Triam Udom Suksa

The tutorial school he went to : https://www.oplus-school.com/

Can I say this TS was good? I think so, it did fit the purpose.

I guess they run courses you might be interested in. I invite you to contact / visit them.

Yeah, I'm not narrow minded.

My daughter was obviously not a friend of maths and science. I didn't force her (as a responsible father) but promoting her skills. So she studied arts and is a well known artist in London and Berlin nowadays. Many Galleries selling her art for high prices.

Many families try to push their breed in a direction to achieve and finish at least Highschool which the parents never did in their life.

I can see some pattern here.

How YOU made your life then?

The sentence is incorrect because it lacks the proper auxiliary verb for a past tense question, uses unnatural emphasis (“YOU”), and is somewhat vague.

He is obviously not a friend of grammar ! :cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

Interesting. An orangutan can write. Somehow vague, but with potential.

It doesn’t surprise me that there are people that believe they can’t do algebra. It does surprise me that people think it’s useless.

Not only do these people vote, they often believe themselves bright.

OP, it you ever knew algebra, just review your kid’s text. It should come back to you quickly.

Quality time.

Congratulations getting into Triam, it’s a great school.

"Puting pressure" can suddenly turn out to be "Infecting with passion".

Each subject at school is like a door to which you need to find a key. If a child has such a key, that is, an understanding of basic things, he may really like this subject in the future.

Maybe not. Let him learn to be a Gardener or Electrician, or Painter or Bricklayer.

In the west perhaps a good idea, but imo not in Thailand.

I don't agree.

If you are ambitious to learn (not just "I can") then you can make a fortune as a plumber, electrician and Gardener in particular. In Thailand.

Thanks for your congrats.

I still remember our son on the evening when he got the entrance tests results. I never saw him so happy and proud, bearing in mind he did choose himself the 2 tests he took…

Strange that some people don’t want to push their kids for the best.

Our son managed to join Triam Udom Suksa in Math-Science. In parallel, he learned how to play the piano (certified by the Trinity College in London) and plays tennis. On the language side, he speaks English, French & Thai fluently.

Some here would argue that he’s achieved it because his parents were unable, ad minima, to finish high school. I'm so sorry to disappoint them, his mother has a BA + a Master + a Post Graduate Dipl. in Economics while I hold 2 master degrees (Law & Business Administration) …

Hope you find a great tutor for Algebra.

Algebra is much underappreciated in importance.

Algebra should begin, in earnest, in grade 8.

The reason for this is that:

Even at MIT, there are many students in first-year calculus who have not had enough practice in Algebra.

And, Algebra is crucial for freshman-year calculus at MIT.

Also, Trig, of course.

But, you need Algebra for Trig, too.

First semester algebra was an 8th grade class when I went. Now Harvard is having to teach remedial math as a result of DEI admissions.

It’s sad what has happened to public education in much of the US. I’m glad my boy went/is going here.

Correct.

We learned a LOT of algebra in 8th grade.

Then, we used it in 9th grade for Geometry class.

Then, 10th grade, we used Algebra, once more, for Trig class.

Then, I forget....we used Algebra for our calculus classes.

Algebra is just so important.

I took no math in high school. I was on the grass by then.

Used the heck out of algebra in calculus.

I loved geometry, one of my favorite teachers.

Yes.

The beauty of Geometry is all in the proofs.

This might be a bit out there for you, but you might find Khan Academy useful. It is  free and covers a wide range of maths.

The first link is the website, and the second takes you straight to algebra. It was originally created by an American guy to help his kids or nieces with their maths, and grew from there.
