LASHKARGAH, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least seven people were killed on Friday morning when a suicide bomber targeted a police station in southern Afghanistan, officials said.

The attack happened when a suicide bomber blew up his explosive-filled vehicle outside a police office located in the Sangin district of Afghanistan's southern Helmand Province, the governor's spokesman, Daud Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

According to Ahmadi, the attacker stopped in front of the gate to the police station when the vehicle suddenly exploded. The blast killed seven people, including three police officers, while five others were seriously injured.

It was not immediately known who carried out the attack, but Pajhwok reported that an investigation is underway to identify the bomber and the group behind the attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility.

Less than two weeks ago, another suicide car bomber attacked a local bank in the same district, killing four people and injuring more than 20 others.
