Menrai Sai Ua

Hope I got it right.

When I was last in Chiangmai I was told this establishment sold the best sai ua. However we had some difficulty with the location. Could a member give me some explicit directions as I'm map challenged (among other various disabilities)

Many Thanks

I don't know the restaurant, but lots of good Chiang Mai sausage around - who said this place was 'the best'?

Sorry if my post sounded challenging. I rephrase. "the lady innkeeper thought this guy was the best - in her opinion". She went on at great lengths to explain the significance of the name "Menrai". The best I could make out it was along the Ping River approaching the Holiday Inn.

I recall reading a reference to this on a blog by ChanChao some years ago.

Mengrai was the founder king of Chiang Mai, and his name is used by quite a few establishments in the north of Thailand. You may be better off trying to find contact info for the innkeeper and asking her again. Otherwise, ask another Thai person and they will surely point you to another shop which they will claim to be the best.....

Good Luck

I read out the title of this thread, and the better half immediately knew of the place and after a little thinking said it was next to the coffee shop opposite the Holiday Inn (same side as Rajavej Hospital). This is perhaps 50/60% sure. I could locate it on a map, but the OP wants directions, though I'm not sure where from, so (I'm not good at this)...

If you're at the Night Bazzar (Chang Klan Road), head off in the direction of the traffic. At the lights by Panthip, head straight on down Chang Klan Road. After 800 metres, you hit another set of lights. Turn left. After 150m, you'll hit a T-Junction. Turn right. this is Charoen Prathet Road and follows the river (out of sight). After another 800m you hit a cross roads where you turn left to go over a bridge. The Holiday Inn is on your right, Menrai apparently on your left next to the coffee shop.

Ratchadamnoen road on the klong side has a food vendor under a little blue tent that comes out around 4pmish, best place ive found for typical northern/isaan food, sold in plastic baggies. Across from the small post office branch. Some things are spicy so beware.

Two places spring to mind.

Market on Canal Road (Mae Hia Market) has a guy thaty makes those long curly turd like sausages (no idea how they taste I'm a veggie).

Other is at Big C in Hang Dong Road (between lotus Tesco/Airport Plaza and Macro) there is an outside stall between Home Pro and Big C that sells lots of different kind - my dad always buys them there when he visits (which is often) - some veryu spicey and/or garlicy.

Both places very cheap and made fresh.

re .. The Holiday Inn is on your right, Menrai apparently on your left next to the coffee shop.

so this shop is between the hospital entrance and the nong hoi traffic lights ... yes ?

Drove past last night, I was slightly wrong in my above post, its on the opposite side of the coffee shop, so between Holiday Inn and traffic lights.

I find this site very useful to locate and communicate directions, a skill light years beyond me.

Tracked down Chanchao's blog.

...........I feel compelled to include the most 'famous' place for Sai Ua in Chiang Mai, which is 'Mengrai Sai Ua' right next to the Sheraton Hotel (formerly named Westin Hotel) ...........
