My favorite drink is beer. I have asked this question numerous times in numerous countries, and received numerous different answers. I am still groggy.

What is light beer?

Posted

American invention as far as I know...supposed to be beer, but has a water content of more than 95%. Wouldn't qualify as beer where I come from.

See also "Coffee Americano", "Pepsi Light" and that margerine that pretends to be butter but is just good enough to grease door hinges.

In the US "light" or "lite" beer is low calorie (joule) beer. It may or may not have the same alcohol content as regular beer. For example, both Miller and Miller Light have an alcohol content of 4.2%.

I believe that in Australia "light" indicates lower alcohol content.

In the US, they have attempted to market beer that is lower in alcohol content as "LA" beer. I don't believe that this has been successful. But, most US beer is pretty LA anyway.

Whether or not these abominations should be labeled as "beer" is open to debate.

Is "instant coffee" really coffee?

Americans also had/have something called "Near Beer". Following anecdote:

"When Frederick Lonsdale, the dramatist, was in America during the prohibition period, he asked for a whisky and soda. The bartender said, 'All we can serve here is near-beer.' 'Right,' said Freddie, 'give me one.' On tasting it, it was all he could do to contain himself on the contents. 'What do you call this?' he asked the bartender. 'Near-beer.' 'Well, all I can say is,' said Freddie, 'you Americans have no sense of distance!'"

American lite beer is based on calories as Buadhai stated, alcohol content is irrelevant.

Canadian Lite beer is rare, but based on alcohol content of usually 4%.

Australian lite beer is usually around 2.5%.

Do they actually have lite beer in Europe?

I know some countries measure alcohol level differently so these all aren't exact.

Always thought of light beer (in the states) as beer to drink while playing softball, or doing something physical outdoors. Yes, "watery" but more thirst quenching that way. Also, the stuff isn't bad for a night on the town when one wants to "hang" all night without getting too tipsy.

But since this is a forum about Thailand, and I have never seen light beer sold here, why is it being discussed? Is this an excuse to pick on the yanks for drinking bad tasting beer? (we do, case closed, argument ended, non-yanks win) I have heard this conversation started over and over again by brits, canucks, kiwis, and aussie as a way to "belittle" yanks because lite beer is popular in the states. Is this something one is taught in yank-bashing school? Yanks are wimps because they drink lower alcohol beer?

There has been a huge debate going on in the USA since the 1970s that got ugly at times. This debate has been over the very topic of this thread; What is Lite beer?

Some people say it's Less Filling while others have said it Tastes Great

Then again Light beer has caused confusion in the past also when dudes go to bar and order a Bud Lite and instead are brought a light bulb. The bartender thought he said Bulb Light

Light Beer created the only Official Party Animal to be registered as a trademark: "Spuds Mckenzie". Unfortunately though, mothers against drunk driving saw to it that old Spuds was banned as it encouraged teenies to drink old Bulb Light.

The Light Beer Battles are HUGE and have been that way for near 30 years now. And don't you forget the Silver Bullet

Spuds Mckenzie's official story is below from worldhistory.com

"Spuds McKenzie was the marketing dog of the year in 1987 when he first showed up in a Bud Light Beer Super Bowl ad. By the end of the game, Spuds was a marketing sensation.

The sly ladies-dog (a Bull Terrier) existed not without his share of controversy. Shortly after Spuds' sensational rise to fame it was learned that "he" was actually a "she" (similar to Lassie, Benji, and many other show-biz dogs).

While this should not really have been considered controversial at all, it was, thanks to the American Media. At one point, in fact, Budweiser execs actually concealed "Spuds" from cameras, so as to hide her female genitals while she answered nature's call.

It also inspired a satire in the comic strip Bloom County, in which it was revealed that Rosebud the Basselope was actually female.

In 1989, the Center for Science in the Public Interest charged (along with Mothers Against Drunk Driving) that Anheuser-Busch was pitching the too-cool-for-monogamy-and-sobriety dog to children and the ad campaign was quickly put to rest.

Honey Tree Evil Eye (Spuds' real name) died of kidney failure on May 31, 1993 in North Riverside, Illinois at age 10. An untrue urban legend had Spuds dying of electrocution while filming a commercial.

The character Slurms McKenzie ("The Original Party Worm") from the television series Futurama is a parody of Spuds."

The Dude wants to add that he thinks that Spuds Mckenzie rules. He can really dig him er he means her

...or playing pool :o . I had a dozen bottles of Miller "Light" and drove home without incident (except for the speed cop on I-95, but he let me go after I did the "finger on the nose", "walk the line" and "recite the alphabet" tests). Miller Lite is like lemonade. :D

It was 1984 when I got pulled over - didn't realise the US cops had speed detectors in their cars :D . But he was a very polite cop. When I asked how he knew how fast I was going, he just said "Radar". Must admit, it gave me a shock when he did a U-turn over the central reservation to come after me. :o

The OP wanted to know about "light" beer, not "lite"

Light beer is the one you can lift up and drink

if you cannot do that it is known as "heavy" and you should use a straw :o

The Dude got yanked over by Smokey the Pig on I-95 in Greenwich CT. Smokey was driving a 91 Mazda MX6 Turbo unmarked. Dude was driving a brand new Chevy Z28 1991. The Dude was doing 105 when he was stopped. Smokey was none too pleased
