BALI, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least eleven people were killed and more than a dozen others remain missing after a boat capsized off the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Wednesday morning, officials said.

The boat, which was carrying at least 36 people, capsized in the waters of Jungut Batu in the the Nusa Penida area of Bali's Klungkung District, Toya Pekeh village secretary Kabir told the Antara news agency.

The accident occurred at around midnight local time as members of a traditional music group were traveling back to their village of Toya Pekeh from the village of Jungut Batu. The boat was captained by I Made Longor, the report said.

Local authorities promptly deployed search and rescue teams consisting of personnel from the Navy, the Water Police, and the Benoa harbor administration. A photo from the scene showed the boat was upside down in the water.

According to the Kompas newspaper, eleven people were rescued and eleven others were found dead as of late Wednesday evening. It is believed at least fourteen people remain missing, but the number could increase because no passenger list was available.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
