Apple Concerned About Production in Flood-Battered Thailand

Apple says the flooding in Thailand will affect the Mac production line, as the flooded factories are major suppliers of its components.

Meanwhile, Western Digital is requesting government assistance and is looking to move production elsewhere.

During the company’s fourth fiscal quarter earnings announcement on Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed condolences to the people of Thailand who have experienced loss of life and property as a result of the monsoons and the flooding.

He added that the weather has hampered Apple’s ability to look into the status of the factories in flooded areas.

Cook expects the company, along with other PC makers, may have trouble obtaining hard drives and parts.

He said the primary effect is on the Mac, because the number of drives or drive components that are sourced in Thailand is a significant portion of the total worldwide supply.

Meanwhile, major hard drive manufacturer Western Digital Corp, which was forced to close its two plants in Navanakorn and Bang Pa-In industrial estates, is developing plans for restoring damaged property and moving machinery and production to other areas.

The company has a number of plans, but has yet to decide which will be implemented because there are various factors to consider.

Relocation of the machinery and production line is one among those plans.

Western Digital has suspended operations of its factories in Navanakorn and Bang Pa-In indefinitely.

The company expects the flooding, which affected its plants and suppliers, will have a serious impact on the company's overall operation and the ability to produce and supply hard drives to the market in December.

Apple, a company and following known for "thinking outside of the box" choosing suppliers in a country known for the opposite.

Almost fell off my chair laughing at this excellent and accurate observation!

Will lessons be learned here??,... the old saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket" comes to mind!

so difference!

And if Honda donates 110 Mill Baht to the Thai government then how will the 10 Mill Baht be distributed to the affected areas? (No misprint, shall be 10 Mill)

Probably basic living supplies such as food, water, medical treatment (including medicines) and subsidized building materials.
