Fighting in Pakistan's Khyber Agency kills up to 43 people

MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Fighting between security forces and militants in Pakistan's Khyber Agency on Friday has left as many as 43 people killed, officials told local media on Saturday.

The clashes happened in Tehsil Bara, which is located in Khyber Agency's Federally Administered Tribal Areas, as Pakistani security forces carried out operations against suspected militant hideouts in the region, sources from Pakistan's Inter Services Public Relations told the Nation.

With the use of gunship helicopters, security forces shelled a number of suspected hideouts, launching the massive operation against militants in Malikdin Khel and Shlober areas of the region. Fighting broke out throughout the day, causing fear and panic among local residents.

As a result of the fighting, sources told the media outlet that as many as 43 people were killed, including 34 militants and three Frontier Corp personnel. Among the fatal victims was Captain Abdul Qadir. In addition, another eight soldiers received gunshot wounds and were transported to a military hospital for treatment.

Among those killed were also six civilians, including children and women, who died as a result of shelling and mortar strikes in the area. At least ten other civilians suffered injuries.
