New Passport Uk

Need some advice, a friends passport has run out of pages he has applied for a new Passport. He is going to BKK to pick it up next week. At the same time his 60 day visa is about to run out. Can he go to a border crossing stamp out then use his new passport to get a 15 day stamp in? Or does he have to get his stamp moved at Immigration to his new passport so he would have a stamp out and back in his new passport?

The process now seems to be done at border for those on visa entry - for extensions of stay it is still done at immigration office prior to exit.
