Nurse Looking And Listening At You When Talking To Doctor At Hospital

Nurse looking and listening at you when talking to doctor at hospital - Is it acceptable in your country that a nurse stays in the room ?

Hi,

I wonder why in Thailand nurses always stay with patient and doctor when you are telling your problems and secrets to the doctor.

Doctors are bound by Hippocratic Oath but not nurses, so they shouldn't know what is your problem.

Have you ever tried to tell a Thai nurse to leave or asked the doctor to tell her ? Does it work ?

Just wondering...

Never felt the need to do so, then again so far have never had to discuss with a doctor anything that anyone else would deem worthy of repeating. Guess I'm not that newsworthy.

I like it when you visit the hospital and ask to see a doctor and the nurse always asks what's wrong with you..."I have sore <deleted>", "erm, what?", "exactly, just get me a bloody doctor!"

In Thai public hospitals, the next punter is in the room with you waiting for their turn, listening and watching everything.

This doesn't happen at the hospitals aimed at westerners like the Bum though.

About 10 years back I went to the hospital and the nurse who takes the blood pressure etc was asking about my symptoms and then advised me there was nothing wrong with me. I think she was more interested in showing off to her subordinates her limited English skills and what a star she was in talking to the westerner. I had to really insist on seeing the doctor. No disrespects to the nursing profession here but I'd rather put my trust in a medical examination by a doc than a nurse telling me there's fuc_k all wrong after just hearing my symptoms.

After seeing the doc I had surgery 2 days later.

In the last few decades I think there has been many legal issue against doctors. Many sexual related including young girls. Also the infamous gay doctor case "หมอนกเขา" also trigger this awareness as well. Google such word and you will find the story. Anyway, most nurses are there to help please don't be angry at them.

That is very Thai. Everyone's an expert at everything, and they believe it with such conviction

You need to start worrying when she's sharing somtam-kai-yang with the doctor in the consultation room and he's wearing those gloves just before your colonoscopy. :D

I have worked in a doctors office and I have been married to a medical doctor for over fifteen years in USA and it was very common and normal for a nurse to be present. Either way the doctor will inform everything that you told him during and after you have left the office. BR

Ive been in Docs when my old boy looked like a fire ravaged monkeys finger.... Just asked the nurse to leave , which she did.

But when I was pulling up my shorts, I did see her eye pressed up against the key hole.

A lot of sniggering from the other nurses too, when I walked out through the hospital waiting room.

Correct. Same in Australia. The nurse is usually still learning the ropes, including the best way to speak to patients, cope with their irritations, questions.....everything.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. They can see what is in your file anyway so what is there to be embarrassed about. The average nurse will have seen more than enough male appendages, and other sensitive bits, not to be more than superficially interested in your problems. Making a song and and dance about it though will certainly mean she remembers you and you embarrassing problems for future visits and give her something to tell her colleagues.

Hand the doctor a note: "My main symptom is that I am unable to speak when I get an erection. Please ask the nurse to leave."ph34r.gif

---------------------------

Or hand that same note to the nurse if that's your choice...after subsituting the word "doctor" for nurse.

But seriously. when I was in hospital in Greece 5 years ago, ALL the procedures were done by the nurses, not the doctors...including the "personal" ones.

The only exception to that routine was if they had to install a catheter for urination...that was done by a male nurse or intern.

But my friend told me that roughly 30 percent of them were gay anyhow.

No, but I've often asked the doctor to leave me alone with the nurse.

I'm not necessarily sure about Thai Nurses and their Code of Conduct, but in the UK it is very clear in terms of confidentiality - I mention this as someone referred to the Hippocratic oath. Nurse's are also bound to a number of codes, which if broken will result in being struck off. In fact the NMC in the UK, is far stricter on professional conduct than that of the Doctors registration (GMC). I suspect there may be some similarities here in Thailand as well, as for Nurses being in rooms with Doctors, pretty commonplace in other countries. Nurse generally have access to all records anyhow, so the OP's initial point is pretty pointless.

Below is a snapshot of the attending nurse I secretly took during one of my hospital visits.

For some reason every time the nurse entered the room my blood pressure would increase and she would insist on giving me a bed bath to cool me down.

I figured that this is a scam to sell more pills and insisted that the nurse not be in attendance while I was with the doctor.

I’m sure all of you would have done the same.

Had a nurse say "your bp is a bit high this am", I replied, "it's because you are so cute"

She replied, "will it go down if I told you I am a man"

I replied, "my bp won't be the only thing to drop".
