Looks like a bit of a long walk. Is a tuk tuk/taxi the best way to get there? And just so I don't get ripped off how much should one be paying for that sort of distance?

Not far to walk. End of Loy Kroh, straight past burger king / Royal Lanna, couple of blocks to the river and the Iron Bridge. 5 - 10 minutes

From Loi Kroh Road? As in the OP....

Any tuk tuks waiting at the Riverside will want a high price, probably not less than 80 baht. Clearly you don't want to be cheated out of a whole bottle of beer.

So you could walk to the bridge, then get a tuk tuk or Songthaew to Thapae Gate. (I would usually say 'Duang Kamon Book Center' when going to Loi Kroh).

As one poster mentioned it's a rather short walk, 5-10 minutes. Walk to East end of Loy Kroh road, cross Iron bridge over Ping River, turn left and walk about 500 meters.
