I would appreciate if someone could help me if they have a greater technical knowledge about Internet connections than I do?

My laptop is connected to an Internet cable inside my apartment building for access to a free Internet service provided by the building management.

I can also use a wireless connection which I'm doing right now to be able to post this question on TV and this is similarly provided by the building management.

The high speed cable service works okay for a few days but then after say 4 or 5 days I can no longer connect. The technician in my building claims it is a software problem in Windows itself in my laptop ,but I don't know what would cause the software to trigger this condition?

The last time the technician told me to go through some steps but I have to admit I have forgotten the very last ones and I wondered if someone here would be able to help me to complete the final steps of the procedure :-

he said to :-

1. Right click on the computer icon on the desktop

2. click on device manager

2. click on " network adapters " these are shown as being

" Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller ( NDIS 6.20 )

and secondly " Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11 PCI-E NIC "

4. After that he told me to " refresh " the connection but I have forgotten how to do so?

But I would also like to know what triggers my computer to go into this state in any case?

The wireless connection is working okay but I have noticed once this fault happens to the cable connection,

the wireless connection doesn't work either until I unplug the cable. Then I can connect to the wireless Internet connection.

But if I leave the cable in then neither the cable or the wireless works?

Find out who the Internet provider is [call an ISP or Internet Service Provider].

Call their help line

They will help find the problem.

Lone techs frequently do not know what they are talkng about.

If you have True, their service is excellent.

Thanks very much but he is not a " Lone tech "? he administers the Internet throughout the three buildings

in this apartment complex.

and when I run the " connectivity doctor " on the computer it appears the connection is normal

so this is why I tend to believe what he was telling me.

With regards to true Internet service no matter how good it is, I don't think I would want to do that

because the service I have right now is free?

The problem must lie with the software in my computer because no on else seems to the problems I do

Was in hotel last month and they had to disable wireless to keep there broadband LAN connection working so you might want to disable and see if that helps. Of course you would have to enable to use again. But really have no idea why there was a problem as did not have issues at home with both enabled.

That's interesting thank you very much maybe I will try that

I used to have dropped connection problems which my ISP could never sort out.

Turned out to be an issue with my machine as when I installed updates from Windows the problem stopped.

Try checking your power saving setup. Sometimes if your laptop is on power save when using battery only it will shut down services such as wireless to conserve power. Symptoms are internet slows down severely or stops altogether. Worth a look into.

Are you sure he said 'refresh' and not 'repair'. Are you using win xp?

If the Network Connections icon appears in the notification area in the lower-right corner of your screen, you can right-click it, and then click Repair

You may want to try updating your drivers and see if that makes any difference, you can download from here http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=51&system=5 unzip to a folder on the desktop then go device manage>network card name >right click then properties and update driver.

The reason why the wireless doesn't work is that you cannot use both connections at the same time so while the Lan connection is set the internet for the wireless will not work, you can go into the network connections properties then change the order so wireless is first but that means you also use the wirelsss..

The easise thing is to go start>right click network then right click >properites> then click change adapter settings>right click the lan adapter then disable then right click again for enable.
