Clipped Words ('Short For')

Featured Replies

Hello,

e.g. Welcome to Baltimore hun !

'hun' is short for 'honey', endearing term.

Is there a term for a word that was shortened to create a new word in Thai ?

I would say:

hun ย่อมาจาก honey

Thanks for the reply eric67.

I ran a search using ย่อมาจาก and that will definately work.

The Lexitron Dictionary has 'memo' as: กระดาษจดบันทึก (คำย่อของ memorandum).

I went on to search คำย่อของ and I didn't pick up anything really different in the results.

Is there a term in Thai linguistics that helps clarify the difference between an abbreviation that is in writing only (e.g. amt. for amount) from an abbreviation like ad (advertisement) ?

In English it appears to be called 'clipping, truncating, or shortening'.

Some abbreviated words seem to take on more of a nuanced meaning as well.

'Did you get the memorandum?' comes across as something official, more urgent.

'Did you get the memo?' sounds more like 'Did you get the note?'

I think of the 'hon' (honey) example in a different way.

While 'hon' is certainly used outside of Baltimore, It is a Baldimore 'wink'.

e.g. The Baltimore Hon man

I am guessing คำย่อ will do as the dictionary term.
