11 burn to death on passenger van in southern Pakistan

2011-12-08 22:12:24 GMT+7 (ICT)

HYDERABAD, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least eleven people were killed on Wednesday when a passenger van caught fire due to a gas leak in southern Pakistan, officials said on Thursday. Several others were injured.

The incident happened when the vehicle was traveling on a Pakistan National Highway and was heading towards Hyderabad, the second-largest city in the country's Sindh province. It was coming from the Shahdadpur area of Sanghar district and was carrying 23 passengers.

According to local media, compressed natural gas which was contained in a cylinder caused an explosion followed by a fire, killing eleven people as they tried to exit the burning vehicle. Among the fatalities were five children.

In addition to those killed, at least fifteen people were reported to have been injured. Some of those injured were in a critical condition, although several had already been released from hospital on Thursday.

Police said the fatal victims were not immediately identified because their bodies were burnt beyond recognition. Doctors were planning to conduct DNA tests to confirm their identities.
